The Earth as a Nurturing Mother

The vast earth serves as a compassionate mother, bearing the weight of all living spirits. Whether upon the surface or deep within the soil, countless lives flourish because of the earth's enduring support. Consider the lush, green grass that blankets the fields. Within this vibrant expanse of green, there exist countless small creatures and spirits whose lives are inextricably linked to the blades of grass that sway in the breeze.

Namo Amituofo, in His infinite wisdom and , once approached a single blade of grass. With a voice as gentle as the morning dew, He asked, "Little one, how long have you been a blade of grass?" The grass, humble and simple, replied, "I do not truly know. I only understand that the cycle of day and night constitutes a single day. I have already passed through more days and nights than I could ever hope to count."

The Perspective of the Small

Namo Amituofo smiled and said, "Allow Me to look into your history for you." With a gaze that encompasses all time and space, He immediately revealed, "You have been a blade of grass for two hundred and sixteen years, two months, seven days, ten hours, and fifty minutes."

The grass was astonished. "Oh! It has been so long? I never felt that such a vast amount of time had passed. When the sun warms the earth and the air grows heavy with heat, I listen to the stories the air carries—tales of the distant places it has travelled and the events it has witnessed. When the cold east wind blows, my body withers and dries, surrendering to the force of the gale. Yet, my roots remain alive deep within the earth. When the spring breeze returns, nourished by the cool dew of the night, we begin to sprout new, tender shoots once more."

The grass continued, "We are here together, day and night, sharing this space with all beings. We feel the footsteps of humans, cattle, horses, kangaroos, and rabbits. Earthworms, snakes, and lizards crawl upon us, burrowing into the soil and turning the earth. Butterflies and birds dance and fly around us. We witness the sunrise and the brilliant colours of the sunset. So many things happen in our presence that my days are never lonely. I never realised that so much time had slipped away."

The Universal Potential for Buddhahood

Namo Amituofo then asked the grass, "Do you wish to continue being a blade of grass?" The grass, reflecting on its existence, asked in return, "If I do not remain as I am, what else could I possibly become?"

The Buddha replied with profound clarity, "You have the potential to become a Buddha." The grass, filled with wonder, asked, "Who is a Buddha? And how can one become a Buddha?" Namo Amituofo answered, "I am a Buddha, you are a Buddha, and all beings are Buddhas. We all possess the same original, true nature."

The grass asked, "Then what must I do to realise this Buddhahood?" Namo Amituofo said, "Do you have a desire to go to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss? It is a realm where every wish is fulfilled, where there is no suffering, and where you no longer need to live the life of a blade of grass. There, you can learn the and attain full Buddhahood. However, you must be willing to go, and you must practise by chanting Namo Amituofo."

The Call to Liberation

The grass replied with , "I am willing to go! I will chant Namo Amituofo. In fact, all of us here are constantly chanting Namo Amituofo in our own way." Namo Amituofo said, "That is wonderful! Please begin chanting Namo Amituofo now. All beings here may begin to chant. Those who wish to be reborn in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, please join in the chanting of Namo Amituofo together."

Suddenly, the golden light of the Buddha shone forth, bathing the green grass in radiance. Upon the earth, the beings who were chanting felt their heavy burdens lift. In an instant, they shed their outer forms and returned to their human bodies. The blade of grass transformed back into the form of a young child—the very life it had lived in the existence prior to becoming grass.

The Buddha said, "My children, please step forward into the golden light. Continue to chant the Buddha-name, and I shall lead you all into the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss." Following His call, the beings moved towards the golden light and vanished within its brilliance, returning to the pure realm of the Buddha.

Gratitude for the Buddha's Compassion

Namo Amituofo never abandons any being, for He knows that every being is a Buddha in essence. To encounter the Buddha at Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, to receive His , and to be led into the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss—this is a grace that fills the heart with infinite gratitude. We are reminded that the path to is always open to those who turn their hearts towards the light.
