The Essence of a Pure Heart
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
The Precious Nature of Purity
In the journey of spiritual cultivation, purity is the most precious quality one can possess. It is not merely a state of mind but the essential, unavoidable process for any practitioner of Buddhism who seeks to move toward and see their true nature. We must understand that the purification of our Body-Mind-Spirit is a profound task that requires diligent practice; it is not something that can be attained by chance or through idle wishing.
The Three Dimensions of Purification
To truly walk this path, we must cultivate purity across three distinct dimensions of our existence:
- Pure Body: This is contained within the purification of . When our sensory inputs are no longer clouded by attachment, naturally reflects this inner clarity.
- Pure Heart: This refers to a heart that is completely free from the stains of defilement. It is a heart that remains untainted by the dust of the world.
- Pure Spirit: This describes the state of the spirit in a practitioner who has achieved true purity.
The state of one's spirit is governed by the universal principle. The more pure a spirit becomes, the higher the level of space it naturally inhabits. This is a fundamental law of the universe; it is not something that can be decided or manipulated by any individual. Whether it is the spirit after the body has passed away, or the spirit during a moment of spirit leaving the body, it will naturally gravitate toward the space that corresponds to its level of purity.
Cultivating the
All dharmas are mind-only. When you possess a pure heart, you will naturally manifest a pure body and a pure spirit. The Four Immeasurables: , , , , are the outward manifestations of this inner pure heart. When you are free from the ego and free from selfishness, you naturally let go of the afflictions that bind you and the obstacles to your knowledge. As these barriers fall away, your heart becomes clear and bright, and the pure heart is revealed in its full radiance.
The Path of , Concentration, and Wisdom
Those who diligently practise the Three Studies—Precepts, Concentration, and Wisdom—will find that their path is clear. By upholding the Precepts, you cultivate meditative concentration. When the heart is pure, wisdom can finally manifest. This is the true achievement of the Three Studies. A person with a pure heart lives in harmony with the world; they do not enjoy complexity, but rather cherish simplicity. They do not seek out noise or clamour, but instead find joy in stillness and peace. Because they have no ego-attachment and no fixed views, they are able to follow Causal Conditions with ease, applying the wisdom of the in every situation.
Returning to the True Self
A practitioner with a pure heart continues to work with diligent practice to see their true nature. By following the teachings found in the Infinite Life Sutra (The Buddha Speaks the Mahayana, Infinite Life, Adornment, Purity, Impartiality, and Sutra) and putting them into practice, you will attain this pure heart. Through this, you will be able to rediscover your original nature—a nature that is inherently equal, impartial, and enlightened. Let us continue to chant Namo Amituofo and walk this path with unwavering faith.
