The Essence of True Practice and Action
An Interview with Venerable Changren
Recorded on September 12, 2018
This is a record of an interview with Venerable Changren, who shares his reflections on the selfless practice at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He speaks to the dedication required to maintain a bodhimanda and the profound inspiration he found in the actions of Practitioner Su. This account was recorded by the chief writer, Shi Faxi, on September 12, 2018.
Venerable Changren speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. Maintaining a temple is by no means a simple or easy task. During my time here, I have witnessed the 'true practice and true action' of Practitioner Su—things that many people in this world simply cannot achieve. To sustain a bodhimanda, one must constantly encounter the suffering of countless beings who are in desperate need of help. It requires immense courage and a heart rooted in one's true self. I am truly filled with to be able to practise here alongside Practitioner Su and to learn so many profound truths from her example.
A Bodhimanda Without Greed
I have never before encountered a place of practice that refuses to accept offerings in the way this one does. We do not use the offerings sent from the ten directions without cause. The temple relies on the basic merit funds from , and the vast majority of our resources come from Practitioner Su’s own personal Generosity. When I first saw this, I was genuinely astonished. I was filled with admiration for such authentic practice—a spirit of 'true practice and true action' that does not covet any worldly fame, profit, or wealth.
The Mission of Universal Deliverance
Everything we do is aimed at the deliverance of beings throughout the ten directions of the Realm. We do not seek benefits or returns from the outside world. The only desire is to give a little more, to contribute a little further, and to seek true practice within the heart’s original nature. Having witnessed this with my own eyes, I was not only deeply moved but also inspired to follow in her footsteps. I wanted to join this path of practice. Such a magnificent and Ultimate Vow has transformed me, leading me to join the ranks of those dedicated to saving the world and spreading the Dharma.
A Commitment to Universal Purification
Today, I am working diligently throughout the entire void to manage and save beings. I am constantly observing everything in this world. Wherever there is a possibility of change or instability, I strive to help coordinate and transform it toward Goodness. My only hope is that this place, which holds such excellent Truth, can truly purify everyone and provide them with the help they need.
True action without seeking reward is the essence of true Generosity. True practice without concern for is the essence of true cultivation. I am still learning these lessons, and I hope that all of you can join us in attaining this state of being—a state of genuine purification and practice. I am deeply grateful for Practitioner Su’s , and I am grateful to Namo Amituofo."
Namo Amituofo.
