The Foundation of Virtuous Conduct
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
The Neglected Virtue in Modern Life
Virtuous conduct is a vital aspect of our character that is often overlooked by people in the modern world. Because society today is obsessed with speed and efficiency, people have lost the ability to look deeply into the true nature of their inner lives. They focus only on the external results of their actions, failing to realise that true goodness is found in the subtle, quiet moments of our daily existence.
For a practitioner, this is a critical oversight. If you wish to make genuine progress on the path to , you must return to the basics of character. You must learn to see the value in the small, seemingly insignificant choices you make every single day, for it is in these moments that your true moral foundation is built.
The Protective Power of
For those of us dedicated to the path of practice, the observance of the Precepts is of the utmost importance. It is not merely a set of rules to follow, but a protective shield for your spiritual life. When you commit yourself to the Precepts, you gain a profound clarity regarding your own behaviour.
The benefits of keeping the Precepts are immense:
- You become acutely aware of improper speech and actions, allowing you to correct them before they cause harm.
- You learn to monitor even the most subtle, fleeting thoughts and intentions that arise within your heart.
- By knowing the Precepts and refusing to violate them, you prevent the accumulation of negative .
- This discipline serves as a wonderful, effective method for steadily increasing your moral virtue.
Breaking the Cycle of Reincarnation
Why do people continue to wander endlessly through the cycle of reincarnation? It is because they have lost the ability to be the masters of their own lives. They do not understand the true reality of the universe, and as a result, they mistake the false for the real. They cling to illusions, and in doing so, they remain trapped in the suffering of the six realms.
For a practitioner, if you continue to live in this state of confusion, you will find it impossible to realise your true nature. You must learn to distinguish clearly between what is true and what is false. By strictly observing the Precepts, you protect the purity of your body, mind, and spirit, ensuring that you do not drift away from the path of awakening.
Manifesting True Virtue
True moral conduct is not something you force upon yourself from the outside. It is a natural expression of your inner character—a reflection of your dignity and your refined spirit. This virtue manifests in several clear ways in the life of a dedicated practitioner:
- Respect for Guidance: You follow the teachings of the Buddha or , the patriarchs and venerable masters, and your true spiritual friend. You do what is right and refrain from what is wrong.
- Refined Speech: You avoid vulgar or coarse language, choosing instead to speak words that are kind, uplifting, and beneficial to others.
- Compassionate Presence: You maintain a gentle and pleasant demeanour. You look for the good in others, you see the goodness in the world, and you hold positive, compassionate thoughts in your heart.
- Self-Discipline and Kindness: You are strict with yourself regarding your own conduct, yet you are broad-minded and forgiving toward others. You treat everyone you meet with genuine courtesy and respect.
- Discernment: You possess the wisdom to distinguish between what is appropriate and what is not. You avoid what is harmful and actively pursue what is virtuous and right.
- Humility: You do not claim credit for your achievements. You work selflessly for the benefit of all beings, ensuring that your actions are never driven by personal gain or the desire to harm others.
- Purity of Heart: You strive to be free from the : greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance, and doubt.
Good moral conduct is clearly visible in the life of those who have realised their true nature. It is the inner substance that is cultivated through self-reflection, personal discipline, and the steadfast observance of the Precepts. By nurturing these qualities, you prepare yourself to return to your original nature and fulfil your aspiration to reach the of Ultimate Bliss.
