Great Master Ouyi, the ninth ancestral master of the , offers us profound insights into the nature of the heart. He teaches that the essence of the Pure Land path lies in the heart, and he uses the metaphor of gold to explain this Truth. Why do we compare the heart to gold? Because gold is both the heart and the substance of our practice. It is soft yet precious, possessing a unique quality that is both malleable and noble. Within this gold lies a latent potential, a raw and unrefined state that, when tempered, can be transformed into anything. It can be used to gild the image of a Buddha, creating a radiant and sacred appearance that shines with brilliant light.
Gold is considered precious because of its durability, its resilience, its capacity for meditative concentration, and the conditions under which it is formed. When we use gold to adorn a Buddha statue, we are essentially creating a sacred vessel. However, we must realise that the Buddha within the statue is, in truth, empty. Whether the image is crafted from gold, jade, copper, stone, wood, or oak, these are merely different materials used to construct the form of the Buddha. Some statues may be hollow, while others are solid; some may be full, while others are empty. Their facial expressions may convey or , but these are merely external manifestations.
The true value lies not in the outer appearance, but in the inner measure—the energy, the magnetic field, and the spiritual atmosphere that resides within. In the realm of ultimate reality, this inner presence is vast and holy. It is this internal quality that truly defines the sacredness of the image.
To cultivate the path, we must treat our own hearts as a piece of raw gold, refining it into a perfect Dharma vessel. In this process, the Dharma acts as the sculptor, the Truth serves as the polisher, and the realisation of emptiness acts as the ultimate understanding. This supreme and wonderful Dharma is waiting for all beings to taste its essence. As the Pure Land teachings spread, we must focus solely on the path to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. We should not be distracted by other matters, nor should our intentions be false. The three holy ones of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss are constantly descending to guide us, and we must follow their lead with sincerity.
The teachings we receive in this life are a precious transmission of the Truth. By treating our hearts as a refined Dharma vessel, we create a field of practice where the Dharma flows freely. Through this, we are nurtured by the Pure Land of , allowing us to transcend the cycle of rebirth across the three periods of time.
The Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, under the blessing of Namo Amituofo and the Three Jewels, is manifested here in this very place. The purifying power of the Buddha’s teachings is our only hope for the future. It is the sincere vow of the Buddha to descend and save us. We are all called to become vessels of this Dharma, invoking the name of the Buddha with every breath. The six-character name, Namo Amituofo, vibrates through the universe, carrying the power to save all suffering beings.
As these Dharma vessels, we must transform ourselves into golden Buddhas. To save the world and spread the Dharma, we must act with true commitment. We must make great vows, for the Pure Land requires courageous practitioners who will protect the Goodness of the Dharma and spread it to the ends of the earth.
The space for our practice is vast and open, a truth that has never been fully articulated until now. It is a vast and expansive reality that we must carry forward. As I, Great Master Ouyi, have done in the past, I now tell you that you must pass these teachings on. Always remember to chant Namo Amituofo, keeping your heart pure and your vision clear.
