The Heart of the Buddha's Teachings
Words of Namo Amituofo
Recorded by Venerable HaiZe on 24 June 2022
My dear children, as you enter the Buddha’s gate, it is essential to understand the fundamental meanings of our path. What is a Buddha? What are the Buddha’s teachings? And what does it truly mean to engage in practice?
The Awakened Path to Liberation
A Buddha is one who has attained complete and perfect . The Buddha’s teachings are, at their core, a form of education—an education designed to help us recognise the true reality of existence. Three thousand years ago, Shakyamuni Buddha looked upon the suffering of all beings and felt deep . To help everyone alleviate their suffering and escape the cycle of rebirth, he shared the methods that we now call the Buddha’s teachings.
The Vast Scope of the Universal Truth
These teachings encompass a profound understanding of the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. They guide us to understand the following realities:
- The laws of and cause and effect, which govern our existence across all lifetimes.
- The six realms of rebirth, where beings wander in confusion and pain.
- The true nature of the physical body, the heart, and the spirit.
- The interconnectedness of the individual, the family, the nation, and society.
- The broader reality of the Earth, other worlds, and the entire Milky Way.
The Art of Diligent Practice
Practice is the process of correcting your own behaviour and thoughts. It is the work of bringing your Body-Mind-Spirit into harmony and achieving purification. Through this, you can become an awakened being, rediscover your original nature, and return to the true self you were at the very beginning. A practitioner’s ultimate goal is to reach this state of awakening, to save the world, and to help all beings attain rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss.
A Life Dedicated to the
United by this common goal, practitioners take the to establish their identity as monastics. This allows them to enter the Buddha’s gate and live a life dedicated to practice. In this limited human life, you must:
- Constantly purify oneself through diligent practice.
- Seek to rediscover your true self.
- Live a life of autonomy and inner peace.
- Follow your vows to save the world and help beings attain rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
- Uphold the responsibility of passing on the Buddha’s teachings and the Pure Land path to future generations.
