The Illusion of Obstacles: Teachings from Namo Amituofo
A Discourse from the First Session of the Thrice Yearning Ceremony

The Shadows That Veil the Heart
In the first session of the , Namo Amituofo offers us a vital teaching regarding the barriers that prevent us from realising our true nature. We often find ourselves trapped by three specific types of obstructions: heart obstacles, action obstacles, and self-obstacles. These are the shadows that veil our true nature. Yet, when we trace these shadows to their source, we find that they are fundamentally empty. Why do we cling to the notion of absolute barriers? I counsel you, my child, to let go of these burdens and allow your heart to rest in the stillness of the present moment.
The world we inhabit is devoid of true substance; nothing within it is absolute. Our true nature is naturally radiant and pure. To brighten the heart is to let the essence of our being ripple forth, unhindered by the dust of the mundane world. As you journey forward, strive to clarify your spirit and awaken to the true path. Do not let wander through the paths of suffering; instead, turn your gaze inward and awaken to the Truth.
The Radiant Essence of the True Self
Do not harbour false intentions. Instead, maintain upright and clear thoughts. To wander into the dust of the mundane is to invite obstacles into the heart. Realise that these errors are of your own making. Open your heart wide to reveal your true aspiration. When you contemplate the suffering within, you will come to understand that the original heart is not suffering at all. Suffering is merely an unnecessary accumulation of false . When you let go of these attachments, the heart naturally returns to its state of profound ease.
Why do you insist on the existence of absolute obstacles? Release your false attachments, and you will find that the world is no longer a place of suffering. As you walk this path, you will gradually become purer and more refined. When you look upon the lost beings of this world with , know that you are drawing closer to me. You shall come to see me, and in that moment, the journey of is complete.
Walking the Path of Awakening
As you move forward on your spiritual journey, you must strive to clarify your spirit and awaken to the true path. Do not let your mind be led astray by worldly desires or the confusion of the mundane world. If you allow your mind to be cluttered with trivial matters, you are only creating more obstacles for yourself. Instead, you should:
- Cultivate a clear and upright mind:
- Ensure your thoughts are always aligned with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.Recognise the source of suffering:
- Understand that the suffering you experience is not inherent to your true nature, but is a result of your own wandering thoughts.Practise the path of liberation: By chanting the name of Namo Amituofo, you can gradually purify your body, mind, and spirit, eventually coming to see the Buddha within.
Do not let your efforts be in vain. Every moment is an opportunity to turn from confusion to awakening, from wrong paths to the right path, and from impurity to purity. When you are at ease in your heart, you will find that the obstacles you once feared are no longer there. Namo Amituofo is always waiting for you to return to your true home.
