The Hidden World of the Wind

In the natural world, wind is formed through complex processes, composed of a vast array of different elements and particles. Each of these components possesses its own spiritual nature and its own unique life force. Within the wind, there exists an uncountable number of living beings. Consider, for instance, the dust particles and air molecules that we perceive as inanimate; in truth, each one is a sentient being. Furthermore, within every single speck of dust and every air molecule, there is not just one life, but a multitude of beings.

These beings are structured across many different dimensions. Each of these beings possesses the Eight Consciousnesses and the Fifty-one Mental Factors, just as we do. Although these beings exist simultaneously within the wind, they are separated by the barriers of their respective dimensions. Because they reside in different spaces, they cannot communicate with one another. They exist within their own realms, living their lives without interfering with those in other dimensions.

The Vision of the Awakened

Human beings, relying only on their physical eyes, are unable to perceive these realities. However, those who have attained a higher state of being can see clearly into these hidden worlds. This includes:

  • Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who possess perfect, unobstructed vision.
  • Those who have realised their true nature and attained .
  • Practitioners who have undergone deep purification, allowing their spiritual vision to open.

These individuals can perceive the conditions of the beings residing within the dust and air molecules that drift through the wind. Beyond these microscopic beings, the wind is also home to many spirits from the spiritual realms, often referred to as Wandering Spirits.

The Plight of Wandering Spirits

These Wandering Spirits were once human, but after their physical bodies perished, they became ghosts. Because these spirits are extremely light, they are able to enter the wind and drift wherever it blows. They are caught in a state of perpetual movement, floating aimlessly through the world. You and I, in our long journey through the cycle of rebirth, have likely been in their position. We may have existed as dust, as air molecules, or as Wandering Spirits, drifting through the wind without a place to call home, our hearts lacking any true foundation or refuge.

Cherishing the Precious Human Life

It is impossible to know how many eons must pass before such a spirit can once again obtain a human body. It is even rarer to encounter the Buddha’s teachings, to meet the path, and to have the opportunity to chant Namo Amituofo and be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. As students of the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, you have now obtained this precious human body. You must truly cherish this magnificent opportunity. You must engage in diligent practice, chant Namo Amituofo to see your true self, and work to save both yourself and all other beings, ensuring that you all reach rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe. Namo Amituofo.
