The Boundless Nature of Wisdom

Namo Amituofo offers these profound teachings to guide us on our spiritual journey. We often ask, why is it said that Prajna wisdom is to know nothing, yet to know everything? A person who possesses Prajna wisdom understands that the unknown is truly infinite. Because they do not impose any artificial limits upon their mind, they remain open to the infinite possibilities that exist within the universe. This is the fundamental concept of the -nature.

Those who possess this wisdom do not claim to have all the answers. Instead, they recognise that by letting go of the need to define or restrict reality, they allow the truth to manifest naturally. This state of mind is not a void, but a state of perfect clarity and receptivity.

The Compassionate Heart of the Wise

A person of Prajna wisdom treats all things and all beings with the utmost respect. They understand that every single being is a potential Buddha. We must treat everyone with reverence, for the only reason a being has not yet realised their true nature is because they are still clouded by delusions and attachments.

  • Respect for all life: Recognising the Buddha-nature within every sentient being.
  • Understanding cause and effect: Knowing that every action creates a result, and that the consequences of negative actions are truly terrifying.
  • Diligent practice: Being cautious not to plant negative causes, so that one may avoid suffering the evil consequences.

Because they know that the Buddha is one who speaks only the truth and the reality of existence, they hold deep, unwavering faith in the words recorded in the sutras.

Walking the Path of Truth

A person of Prajna wisdom practises the state of and places their full faith in the Buddha. They understand that the Buddha is the ultimate follower and guide of the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. By following the Buddha's guidance and listening to these teachings, one can be certain that they are on the correct path. Namo Amituofo and all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are the embodiment of this Prajna wisdom.

When one achieves and attains Buddhahood, they naturally possess this wisdom. By following the teachings of the Buddhas, one can surely attain the Buddha's path. Furthermore, a person of Prajna wisdom is always humble and modest. They are acutely aware of their own shortcomings and remain in a constant state of learning, always ready to show respect to others.

The Treasure of the Infinite Life Sutra

For those of us practising in the school, the path is clear. We must take The Infinite Sutra (The Buddha Speaks the , Infinite Life, Adornment, Purity, Impartiality, and Sutra) and put it into practice with sincere faith. This sutra is the supreme treasure for any practitioner in this life who wishes to achieve Awakening and realise their true nature. It provides the three essential provisions—Faith, Vows, and Practice—necessary for one to be reborn in the Western Pure Land and accomplish the great task of ending the cycle of rebirth.

Finding Stillness in the Unknown

My child, one does not gain wisdom without experiencing the lessons of life. As you practise step by step, you will gradually see the truth of reality. When the light of Prajna wisdom finally emerges, you will understand what it means to know nothing, yet know everything. You will be able to draw inferences about many things from a single principle, seeing the interconnectedness of all existence.

Those who have not yet reached Awakening but understand that the unknown is infinite will naturally become humble, modest, and harmonious. They are wise because they remain in a state of respectful learning, and such individuals are truly worthy of our respect. Those who understand the infinite nature of the unknown can remain calm even when faced with sudden changes. They know that impermanence is the truth of this world. By recognising the essence of impermanence, they can face the changes of life with composure and clarity. Because we do not know what the future holds, we must cherish the present moment. Everything in this world is in a state of constant flux, and only the true nature of the mind remains eternal and unchanging. Namo Amituofo.
