The Karmic Mirror: Understanding the Origins of Our Faces
An Interview with Venerable Chang Ren
Recorded by Shi Fa Jing on April 18, 2023
Venerable Chang Ren, a monastic who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre and currently resides there, shared these insights on the spiritual origins of human appearance. This interview was recorded by the chief writer, Shi Fa Jing, on April 18, 2023.
Venerable Chang Ren speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. Every person's appearance does not come about without reason. Every single face carries its own unique set of Causal Conditions. While our genetic inheritance provides a preliminary template for our features, have you ever stopped to wonder why you might look remarkably like your mother, your father, or perhaps even your grandmother or grandfather? When we examine this through the lens of past Causal Conditions, we realise that this physical resemblance is a manifestation of a particularly deep connection shared between these individuals across time.
The Deep Roots of Resemblance
Within these profound connections, the bond may span a single lifetime, or it may stretch across many. When a spirit prepares to be reincarnated, and when all the necessary conditions are met, that spirit enters the womb of the mother in this life and is born into this world. Every newborn infant begins in a state of purity. Their heart, having just undergone the process of reincarnation, has not yet been influenced by the external environment of this world. They retain a state of innocence, yet the latent habits or bad character traits brought forward from previous lives remain. These traits reside deep within the soul, and they begin to quietly influence the development of and the physical appearance of the child.
The Transformation of Childhood
Many children start their lives with adorable, innocent faces. However, by the time they reach the age of five, six, seven, or ten, we often begin to see subtle changes. These shifts are largely tied to the child's internal thought processes, their developing personality, and their emotional state. Think about it—a child born into a pessimistic family environment may start with a pure, untainted appearance, but as they grow, the influence of their surroundings becomes increasingly significant. Their thinking begins to mirror that pessimism, and even at a young age, they may become prone to hysteria. By the time they reach the age of eight, those once-clear features may begin to show signs of tension, with brows perpetually furrowed. If you look closely into their eyes, you can see a profound sense of helplessness and melancholy.
The Accumulation of Spirits
Very quickly, the face of such a child begins to attract a multitude of sentient beings who resonate with those same negative emotions. Whenever the child experiences a surge of emotion, these beings rush forward to attach themselves. If one were to look into the space within the eyes, one would see that it is packed with beings—a deep, layered accumulation. The expression in the eyes changes constantly, and each change represents a different group of beings taking their turn. The child's original, pure appearance is gradually eroded by the influence of the postnatal environment and the relentless pursuit of their own karmic debts from past lives. The face they wear eventually detaches from the innocence they brought into this world, becoming a face that is uniquely their own—a face that reflects their own personality, their own , and their own complex web of Causal Conditions.
Changing the Face Through the Heart
However, the face can be changed by adjusting the heart. By working on the heart, one is essentially taking steps to transform one's , to refine one's latent habits or bad character traits, and to resolve the conflict with one's karmic creditors. Naturally, as the heart changes, the physical appearance of the face will follow suit. Many people are preoccupied with the discriminations between beauty and ugliness, but when we view these matters through the lens of such complex Causal Conditions, we realise that there is no true beauty or ugliness to be found. Instead, we should look at a face and see the spirit that has been reincarnated throughout its many lives, reflected right there in those features. From this, we should gain a deep realisation, understand the sorrow and suffering of samsara, awaken to the truth, and seek liberation from this cycle. Namo Amituofo."
