The term Buddha signifies the state of being fully awakened. Buddha-nature is the inherent quality of this ; it is the original, primordial nature that exists within every sentient being as a fundamental capacity. To understand the progression of our spiritual journey, we must distinguish between two essential aspects of this awakening: Original Awakening and Initial Awakening.
The Primordial Light and the Stirring of Wisdom
Original Awakening refers to the innate capacity for that we all possess from the very beginning. It is the pure, unblemished potential of our true nature. Initial Awakening, on the other hand, refers to the moment one begins to stir from the slumber of ignorance. It is the first step of the journey, where the light of wisdom begins to pierce through the darkness of our long-held habits.
Once a practitioner of the establishes the correct knowledge and views, they can easily utilise the Seven Factors of Awakening. By following these levels, one can gradually elevate their state of and refine their practice.
Seven Steps Toward the Infinite
The Seven Factors of Awakening provide a structured path for the practitioner to follow in their daily life:
- -selection: This is the act of discerning and choosing the teachings that align with one's interests and are in sync with the conditions necessary for spiritual growth.
- Diligent practice: One must adopt a spirit of righteous effort, treating diligent practice as a virtue that is maintained with unwavering consistency.
- : By choosing to nourish the heart with the sweetness of the Dharma, one becomes filled with Dharma joy, allowing one to contribute to the world according to the conditions at hand.
- Elimination: This involves turning away from bad habits and moving toward Goodness, actively cleansing the mind of impurities and purifying the beginningless karmic habits that cloud our vision.
- Meditative concentration: One must remain steadfast on the righteous path, observing the nature of Bodhi and dwelling constantly in a state of single-mindedness, free from confusion.
- Letting go: This is the practice of dedicating all merit to others, acting without the desire for reward or attachment to , thereby becoming a practitioner who moves with great freedom.
- : This is not merely observing the arising and ceasing of thoughts, but rather understanding how to manifest the truth of the Dharma in every moment with profound clarity.
The Full Bloom of the Buddha's Path
The ultimate goal of the Buddhahood is defined by three pillars: self-awakening, awakening others, and the perfection of one's practice. When these three are complete, one reaches the pinnacle of the Buddha's path.
For those residing in the Western Land of Dharma Nature, understanding the difference between original and initial awakening is vital. You must begin to apply these Seven Factors of Awakening in your daily life. Through this consistent practice, you will transform your habits, purify your heart, and ultimately attain Buddhahood. This is the path to leaving suffering behind and finding true, lasting happiness.
This message was recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Shi Hai Liang, acting as the chief writer.
