The Life and Legacy of Lay Practitioner Xu
Teachings from Venerable Xuanzang
Recorded on January 29, 2019
The Fleeting Nature of Human Existence
Life is like a dream, appearing for a moment only to vanish, much like flowers in the sky or the reflection of the moon in water. Where is the life of Lay Practitioner Xu now? We look to the Jewel, the images, the sounds, and the footprints left behind to understand the path he has walked.
The aging body finds every step a struggle. We recall the past—the moments of praise, the times of loneliness, and the periods of glory. This life was dedicated to saving beings, yet there was a moment when the truth was not fully perceived. Now, it is time to return to the original, pure state. The Buddha’s children in this world often fail to recognise the Buddha’s presence. Yet, the Buddha is in the of Ultimate Bliss, and the Buddha is also here at Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre. Namo Amituofo is forever in our hearts.
Returning to the Original Nature
Lay Practitioner Xu’s life in this world has been a model for others to follow; truly, he is a light of the Pure Land. Sixty years is not a short time. One should face the world with emptiness and handle affairs with wisdom. Perhaps in the past, he was strong, but now is frail and weak. One must realise that in this life, all things are empty. Only by heading toward the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss can this life be considered a true success.
A Sign of Progress
Yesterday, Lay Practitioner Xu seemed to awaken. He spoke a single word: "Thirsty!" Those nearby immediately offered warm water, helped him sit up at the edge of the bed, and supported him as he moved toward the washroom. I, Venerable Xuanzang, asked, "Is this the intention of Lay Practitioner Li?" Lay Practitioner Li replied, "Yes! I felt that Lay Practitioner Xu’s body needed water, so I voiced this request."
Now, Lay Practitioner Xu’s body has recovered somewhat and he can follow the intentions of Lay Practitioner Li. Though it was a simple word, it is a significant step forward. I, Venerable Xuanzang, and Lay Practitioner Li continue this work, hoping it brings further aid. How fortunate! How truly fortunate!
The Preciousness of Remaining Time
This current body must be used wisely. It is not merely an empty vessel; it should be put to good use. Lay Practitioner Xu is precious, respected by all in this world who hear his words. The mistakes of the past must now be turned around. Only by returning to clarity can one make amends for past errors. The Buddha’s has granted Lay Practitioner Xu more time—this life is a gift! Treasure it, for the days are few. Connect the past with the present.
The Pure Land continues this life, and Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre is the place where this work is done. Take Namo Amituofo as your reliance, and the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss as your final shore. My disciple, Practitioner Su, leads the way forward. We shall reach the other shore, riding upon the lotus flowers, bathed in the fragrance of the Pure Land.
This message was recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe, who serves as the chief writer.
