The Mirage of Existence: Teachings from Namo Amituofo
A Discourse from the Hong Kong Winter Dharma Assembly
Day 6 of the Disaster Mitigation and Wish Fulfillment Dharma Assembly

The Mirage of Existence
Life within the illusion—what truly constitutes an illusion? Can the illusions of this world be discerned from within the vastness of space? Fantasies and illusions are infinitely layered throughout the dimensions of space. In this vast and boundless world, what is the nature of the reality that people seek? We must consider whether what we perceive as real is truly the truth.
The Infinitely Layered Universe
The universe is infinitely layered, and within every dimension, there is constant change. Our physical bodies interact with this world through sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touch, and the phenomena of the mind. Given these sensory , what can truly be called real? An illusion is termed as such because it is a reflection of the heart's perceptions. These perceptions are in a state of myriad, constant change. The profound meaning within the Heart Sutra lies in this very nature of illusion.
The Heart as the Root of All Phenomena
To know the illusion, to resolve the illusion, and to remain in meditative concentration within the illusion—this is how one prevents these mirages from disturbing the heart. The logic of the heart is the ultimate truth. The heart is the root of all myriad phenomena, and it is also the source from which all false perceptions are resolved. One must understand the true meaning of the heart. Namo Amituofo.
Transcending the Mirage through Meditative Concentration
By choosing to practise meditative concentration, you can maintain a heart that is as still as a calm lake. When the heart is no longer agitated by the external world, wisdom will naturally manifest. This is the success of diligently engaging in the practice of the Buddha. Do not be deceived by the temporary nature of the world. Instead, focus your energy on the practice of chanting Namo Amituofo. By doing so, you will find that the illusions of this world lose their power over you, and you will be able to return to your original, true nature. Namo Amituofo.
