The Single Thought of Choice

Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offers profound wisdom on the nature of good and evil, reminding us that our choices define our spiritual trajectory. Whether we perform acts of Goodness or create depends entirely on a single mental note. This is a matter of great concern for the practitioner. When we choose Goodness, our hearts become bright and clear. Conversely, when we choose evil, we fall into the darkness of confusion, and our hearts become obscured by ignorance.

The Inner Path to Truth

We often travel long, arduous roads searching for the Truth, yet we frequently fail to realise that the Truth resides within our own hearts. Only when one reaches the state of an awakened being can one truly perceive this Truth. When one sees their true nature, the Truth and -nature resonate in perfect harmony. If no one teaches us the distinction between Goodness and evil, it is difficult to maintain clarity and cease our harmful actions. Without proper guidance, we may unknowingly commit various transgressions:

  • Killing: Taking the lives of other sentient beings.
  • Stealing: Taking what is not given.
  • Sexual misconduct: Engaging in improper relationships.
  • Lying: Using speech to deceive others.

These actions lead to suffering, and we cannot escape the Causal Conditions and the bitter fruits that follow. We must understand that our actions have consequences that will eventually manifest.

The Practice of True Goodness

True Goodness is defined by selflessness and the state of . It is the act of serving others without seeking credit or recognition. To cultivate this, you must:

  • Listen to sutras and hear the to gain wisdom.
  • Diligently change your ways regarding your latent habits or bad character traits.

When you achieve this, your heart becomes cool and peaceful. You will understand the ultimate meaning of the teachings and attain true freedom. It is important to remember that if you do not hold your good deeds in your heart, that is true merit. If you perform good deeds only so that others will know of them, that is merely a worldly Blessing.

The Weight of Selfishness

Evil, by contrast, is rooted in selfishness and the ego. It prioritises the self above all others. When you seek to enrich yourself at the expense of others, you create endless afflictions. In the most severe cases, one cannot avoid the retribution of the hells. Therefore, you must be cautious and never create karma. By maintaining a mind free of attachment and filled with pure Goodness, you will see your true nature. Recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
