The Formation of Our Internal World

Within the state of meditative concentration, one can perceive the reality of existence. Every individual is unique, shaped by different backgrounds, national identities, and character. Because of these differences, there is always a complex process of deconstruction and analysis occurring within the heart. Human beings have a habitual tendency to probe others and to seek understanding of them. However, in the very process of trying to understand, we often inject our own preconceived notions into the situation, burying these thoughts deep within the space of our hearts, where they spin and circulate endlessly.

As these thoughts rotate, they distribute a specific magnetic field around us. Whether this magnetic field is one of goodness or one of negativity depends entirely on the nature of the mental note we are holding at that moment. This magnetic field acts like a great magnet, drawing in sentient beings who are in sync with that specific energy. Once they arrive, they cling tightly to us, much like how we ourselves cling to our own habits, finding it incredibly difficult to let go.

The Responsibility of the Practitioner

In the process of refining our practice, we often find ourselves searching for excuses to justify our current state. We must realise that once we rationalise these reasons, we are effectively remaining exactly where we are. By continuing to emit the same thoughts from that same stagnant position, we open the door to receiving beings who match that frequency. It can be said that all the electrical activity within our body and mind is something we are operating ourselves. If we wish to bring this activity to a halt, we must understand that we are the only ones with the power to do so.

The Crucible of Spiritual Refinement

When will you awaken? When will you truly realise the truth of your situation? When will you be willing to face yourself honestly? The process of transformation is difficult to endure, yet it is a process that must be undergone. It is much like being cooked in a pot. Whether you are being refined into a nourishing tonic or boiled into a bowl of bitter medicine depends entirely on every thought and intention you hold during the process. It depends on the accumulation of your mental notes.

Even though the medicine may be bitter, it is still medicine, and it is necessary for your healing. The essence of the Buddha’s teachings lies in the ability to refine the subtle aspects of our being—to carefully monitor every thought and intention as it arises. If you can view this process with a joyful countenance, you will reap a bountiful harvest. Finding the extraordinary within the ordinary is the true essence of the Buddha’s teachings.

This message was recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Shi Faxin, who served as the chief writer.
