Teachings from Teacher-Practitioner Xia Lianju
The Essence of Sentient Existence
In general terms, we define sentient beings as people and animals—those who possess , thoughts, and . Conversely, we often refer to the environment, land, mountains, rivers, plants, and minerals as insentient beings. However, as we deepen our understanding of the , we come to realise that even within the land, the mountains, the rivers, the plants, and the minerals, there are sentient beings residing within them.
A is also known as an awakened sentient being. This title refers to one who has achieved a state of profound . This awakening is twofold: it is the process of awakening oneself and, subsequently, awakening others. Therefore, an awakened sentient being is one who possesses the capacity to enlighten themselves and to guide others, to save themselves and to save all beings.
The Path of the Six Paramitas
To reach the ultimate goal of Buddhahood, a Bodhisattva must engage in the broad practice of the Six Paramitas. These are the essential steps for one who seeks to walk the Buddha's path:
- Generosity (Giving): The practice of giving freely of one's resources, time, and Dharma to benefit others.
- Discipline (): Upholding the Precepts to maintain purity of body, speech, and mind.
- Patience (Endurance): The endurance of hardship and the ability to remain calm in the face of adversity.
- Diligent practice: The continuous, unwavering effort to progress on the path of awakening.
- Meditation (Concentration): Cultivating deep concentration to stabilise the mind and reveal one's true nature.
- Wisdom (Prajna): The realisation of the ultimate truth, which allows one to see through the illusions of the world.
When these six practices are perfected, the Buddha's path is attained. Therefore, if you wish to become a Buddha, you must first perfect these six practices of the Bodhisattva. This requires a significant amount of effort and dedicated practice; only then will you have the opportunity to realise your true nature and achieve the ultimate goal.
