The Vigilant Practitioner
For those who have dedicated their lives to the practice of chanting Namo Amituofo, the path requires constant care and unwavering caution. It is not enough to merely go through the motions; one must be deeply aware of the subtle movements of the mind. You must be vigilant to avoid the pitfalls that often hinder progress on the spiritual path.
You must be wary of the "self," personal ego, and selfishness that frequently manifest in your daily life. These are the barriers that prevent your true nature from shining through. Avoid the trap of laziness or failing to put your practice into action. Knowledge without application is like a map that is never used; it cannot lead you to your destination. If you recognise a fault within yourself but fail to correct it, you are stagnating. You must cultivate your awareness so that you not only understand these principles but actively embody them in every action you take.
Navigating the Currents of
When you have not yet fully transformed your karma, the challenges of aging, sickness, and death will inevitably appear. During these times, you must be even more cautious. When you encounter difficulties, it is often because there are aspects of your practice that are not in alignment with the True Teachings, the Truth, and the Right Way. Inappropriate thoughts, uncorrected faults, and lingering "self," personal ego, and selfishness are the very places where karmic forces find their leverage.
You must understand that your are always present. They follow you, waiting for the right conditions to seek revenge and repay grievances. When these challenges manifest, you should always maintain a heart of deep repenting and shame for past actions. Recognise that the suffering you experience today is the result of negative causes and selfish thoughts you planted in the past. When the fruit of these past actions ripens, accept it willingly. Do not complain. Instead, focus on correcting your ways immediately. By refusing to generate new negative karma through your Body, Speech, and Mind, you can finally resolve these long-standing problems.
The Wisdom of Stillness in Conflict
In the face of life and death, please focus your heart on chanting Namo Amituofo. Maintain a peaceful, steady mind. If you are still in this world, chanting is the most effective way to calm your own heart and the hearts of your karmic creditors. If the time has come for you to depart, this peaceful state of mind will allow you to be free from the suffering of the physical body and be received by Namo Amituofo into the of Ultimate Bliss.
Be aware of how inappropriate thoughts manifest in your daily life: they appear within your "self," personal ego, and selfishness; they surface in your conversations and the way you speak to others; and they reveal themselves in how you communicate and interact with those around you. When you notice these thoughts, you must have the awareness to stop them immediately. Do not hold onto grudges or store unpleasant memories in the corners of your heart, as these become shadows that cloud your spirit. Never allow harmful, inappropriate, or obstructive thoughts to remain hidden within you. If these thoughts are allowed to persist, they will inevitably lead to the creation of negative causes, resulting in the bitter fruit of suffering.
Protecting the Merit of the Heart
People living in this world of impermanence and the Five Turbidities and Evil World often struggle because they do not understand the difference between right and wrong. They do not know the True Teachings, the Truth, and the Right Way. Consequently, they act according to their own limited thoughts and desires. Because these thoughts are not in accordance with the , they live lives of confusion, creating negative causes and suffering the consequences. This is why you must strictly follow the . They are the protective barrier that ensures you do not create new karma, do not taste bitter fruits, and do not suffer. They allow you to walk the Buddha's path with peace of mind.
Furthermore, when your meditative concentration is not yet fully developed and your mind is prone to fluctuation, you must be careful not to judge others. If you see someone doing something you believe is wrong, do not be quick to point it out. You must realise that if you are pointing out their faults, your heart is likely already filled with dissatisfaction. Your tone, expression, and attitude will inevitably reveal your anger, which will only trigger the other person's defensiveness or resentment. This creates a cycle of conflict, leading to the creation of karma through Body, Speech, and Mind. Instead, maintain a peaceful heart. Cultivate , tolerance, Wisdom, and a vast mind-capacity. Do not let your heart be stirred. By remaining calm, you avoid attracting karmic creditors or allowing attached spirits to enter. Do not align yourself with the demon crowds, for that only leads to mutual harm. If you lose your compassion and tolerance, and cannot endure a moment of anger, the fire of your resentment will burn down your entire forest of merit. You must be cautious!
Even the most subtle fluctuations in your heart are significant. If your thoughts are virtuous, they cause no harm. But if you harbour negative thoughts—greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance, or doubt—you only harm yourself. Everything in this universe operates according to the laws of karma and cause and effect. You must keep this firmly in your heart. Keep the Buddha-name in your heart 24/7. Do not let it be interrupted. Chant Namo Amituofo with a straight, sincere heart. Do not let false thoughts or wandering intentions arise. This will dissolve your obstacles into nothingness and resolve your difficulties in the present moment. Do not be careless or slack. In all things, be careful and cautious.
