The Path of Compassionate Conduct
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
The Heart of Selfless
Teachings from Namo Amituofo, recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe. On the fifteenth day of September in the year 2023, Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju provided the following guidance on the nature of compassion.
A heart of compassion is defined by thinking of the needs of all beings, rather than focusing on one's own desires. When you engage in compassionate conduct, you serve others with a heart full of . You do not calculate how much time or physical energy you have expended. You are able to give freely without seeking any reward or recognition in return. Your only wish is that the other person may leave suffering behind and find happiness, and that their heart may be filled with joy.
True compassion is selfless service for the sake of the collective, rather than acting out of a private, selfish heart that holds back one's full effort. It is a total commitment to the well-being of others.
Clearing the Veils of
Compassion is an inherent quality of your true self; it does not need to be sought from the outside. However, because we live in a world of turbidity, our hearts have become polluted. This pollution acts as a veil, obscuring our true self so that we can no longer see the compassion that naturally resides within us. Instead, we see only the selfishness and self-interest that arise from this pollution. Therefore, we can understand that when a practitioner’s heart is purified, it draws closer to the true self.
When you possess a strong personality, you are constantly calculating for yourself, protecting your own interests, and holding onto subjective views. This is the pollution of selfishness. To walk the path of compassion, you must actively work to change your personality traits. You must strive to reach a state where you have no ego, allowing you to:
- Follow conditions naturally without resistance.
- Remain at peace regardless of the circumstances you encounter.
- Avoid being swayed or led astray by the external environment.
- Refrain from creating negative causes and instead cultivate good causes.
- Avoid forming negative karmic ties and instead build broad, positive connections with all beings.
The Diligent Path to
Even when the environment changes, your heart must remain steadfast in seeking the and maintaining inner stability. When your heart is not agitated, when you do not give rise to anger, and when you maintain a joyful countenance while diligently performing every task with sincerity, you are engaging in compassionate conduct.
If you wish to follow the Buddha's path and rediscover your true self, you must commit to purification, and then more purification. This requires significant effort and diligent practice. You must awaken your mind, chant Namo Amituofo with a single-minded focus, and put these teachings into action in your daily life. Through diligent practice to dissolve your , you will be able to realise your true self sooner and save suffering beings, guiding them to rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss. This is the true meaning of compassionate conduct.
