The Path of Constant Renewal

An Interview with Venerable Chang Ren

Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre3 min read0 views

This interview with Venerable Chang Ren was recorded on November 4, 2019. In this session, the Venerable shares profound insights regarding the nature of learning and the essential steps required for spiritual growth. The record was transcribed by the disciple Shi Faxi.

Venerable Chang Ren speaks:

"Namo Amituofo. When we discuss the process of learning, we must recognise that diligent practice and laziness represent two entirely different ways of moving forward. One path leads to , while the other is a continuous, aimless march into the darkness. If one wishes to achieve success in their practice, they must constantly strive to move toward the light. We must not allow the darkness within our own hearts to cloud our judgement or contaminate our progress once again. Your heart, when dedicated to practice, must remain firm and unwavering.

The Necessity of Self-Reflection

Whenever you encounter a test or face a setback, you should take the time to deeply examine yourself. Ask yourself: 'Is there something I need to change? Is there a habit I must let go of?' Learning is only effective when we possess the courage to recognise our faults and the willingness to correct them. Only through this process can we achieve gradual breakthroughs and experience true transformation and growth. To learn is to know how to renew oneself. As you continuously engage in the process of purification, the things you are able to realise will become increasingly profound. You will find yourself sensing deeper insights, and your life will become more authentic, allowing you to reclaim its true meaning.

The Urgency of This Life

Our journey through this world is not meant to be aimless. It requires a conscious shift in direction. On the path of life, regardless of how many choices you have made, you must eventually ask your heart: 'Am I truly at peace?' Or are you still wandering in a state of constant hesitation and doubt? At the end of your life, will you be able to look back and truly accept the decisions you have made? Life is a performance that happens only once. If you miss your chance, there will be no opportunity for a second act. Think about it—we have been trapped in the cycle of rebirth for so long. If you miss the opportunity in this current life, the chance to escape samsara may not come again!

Breaking Through Delusion

Every person should carefully and clearly consider: 'Why have I still not been able to break through delusion and attain ?' What exactly is it that you are so confused about? What kind of desires are holding you back, making it so difficult for you to let go? Furthermore, what is the reason you are unwilling to make a change? The very purpose of practice is to facilitate change. Even if you are not practising for the sake of enlightenment, a life that never undergoes change is ultimately a failed result. Life is fleeting and passes in the blink of an eye. Everyone should seize this opportunity to learn well. To learn and constantly renew oneself is to create a different version of yourself—a version that has reclaimed its original nature. Only then does this life truly become meaningful.

The Stepping Stones to Achievement

Every individual has their own unique process of transformation. Do not be afraid of failure along the way. As long as you persist and continue to move in the direction of the Truth, every change you make—even the difficult ones—will serve as a stepping stone toward your ultimate achievement. I am deeply grateful to my grandmother, and I am grateful for the of the Buddha. Namo Amituofo."
