The Path of Diligent Practice and Steady Progress
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
The Foundation of Diligent Practice
Diligent practice is the essence of true, tireless effort. For any practitioner walking the path of the Buddha, this is an absolute necessity. There is no such thing as gaining the fruits of the without putting in the work. The path of our predecessors was built step by step, with each footprint marking a journey of sincerity and devotion. We must follow this same path, walking steadily and with unwavering focus.
In this current age of the Dharma’s decline, the obstacles faced by sentient beings are immense. Internally, we carry karmic seeds as deep as the ocean and as high as Mount Sumeru. Our ego-attachment and personal views are deeply ingrained, and our personalities are often rigid and difficult to tame. Externally, we are constantly besieged by the interference of demons and the endless temptations of the . Without a spirit of diligent practice and concrete, daily action, it is incredibly difficult to achieve success in one’s spiritual cultivation.
The Urgency of Our Mission
Today, the environment for practice is better than ever before, and our daily lives are filled with unprecedented convenience. Yet, the level of pollution affecting our Body-Mind-Spirit has become increasingly severe. This makes the work of a true spiritual friend—who strives to save the world and rescue suffering beings—far more arduous than in times past. Nevertheless, we must continue this work without hesitation.
If we reach out to save others, those who are suffering still have a chance to be rescued. If we do not act, sentient beings will continue to sink deeper into the cycle of rebirth, and one must ask: when will they ever find salvation? If we do not save them in this lifetime, when will we ever meet again in the future to help them leave the bitter sea of birth and death behind?
The Path at Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre
Diligent practice and steady progress are especially vital for those of us who practise here at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Goombungee, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. We are incredibly fortunate to have the support of Namo Amituofo, the guidance of our teachers, and the assistance of Practitioner Su. It is as if we have been given wings to fly; we are empowered to accelerate our progress toward the goal of becoming an awakened being and leaving suffering behind.
However, this requires a sincere vow—a great, unshakable vow. You must follow this vow and move straight ahead, facing and breaking through every obstacle that arises. This is the proper attitude and understanding that every seeker of the Dharma must possess.
A Promise of Success
Even if you have not yet overcome the state of being drowsy during your practice, or if you have not yet learned how to navigate the different dimensions of space, do not be discouraged. Even if your personality has not yet been fully transformed, there is hope for you.
- As long as your faith in the Buddha remains steadfast and does not retreat.
- As long as you continue to follow the teachings of the Buddha, the guidance of your teachers, and the direction provided by Practitioner Su.
- As long as your vow remains firm and you put it into actual practice every single day.
- As long as you remain committed to facing and overcoming your challenges.
If you maintain this spirit of diligent practice, you will surely make progress, and your spiritual cultivation will eventually achieve great success. Namo Amituofo.
