The Path of Personal Responsibility: On What is Relevant and What is Not
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
The Solitary Path of the Soul
When it comes to the sacred work of spiritual practice, we must understand a fundamental truth. Even with the presence of , whose body encompasses the entire Realm, serving as our Great Teacher, and even with the compassionate guidance provided by Practitioner Su, we are still faced with a solitary path. We are blessed with a high-quality environment for practice and the diligent support of the Dharma protectors, yet we must realise that no one can walk this path for us.
No one can perform the essential tasks of your spiritual journey on your behalf. You must take full responsibility for your own progress. Specifically, no one can:
- Purify your mind and spirit for you.
- Change your deep-seated personality traits and habits for you.
- Engage in the fierce, diligent practice required to awaken your true self.
- Chant Namo Amituofo with the sincerity needed to ascend the lotus throne and be reborn in the of Ultimate Bliss.
In this sense, the actions of others are ultimately irrelevant to your own spiritual attainment. What is truly relevant is whether you are willing to let go of all worldly attachments and dedicate yourself entirely to your practice. Your liberation depends solely on your own commitment and your own heart, aligning yourself with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.
The Unavoidable Currents of Samsara
Consider the nature of our existence within the cycle of rebirth. When we look at the reality of our lives, we see that we have no control over the fundamental stages of our physical journey:
- Birth: We arrive in this world without a choice, entering into a life governed by .
- Aging: The process of growing old is an unstoppable force of nature that we cannot command or halt.
- Sickness: When illness arises, we must endure the suffering that accompanies it, often feeling helpless against the fragility of .
- Death: When the time of death arrives, the separation of the four elements is a process of profound and unbearable suffering.
In the face of birth, aging, sickness, and death, no one—not even our parents, our children, or our closest loved ones—can take our place. Whether we are experiencing the temporary happiness of the three good realms or suffering the consequences of our actions in the three evil realms, we must face these realities alone. No one can substitute for us in the karmic accounts we must settle.
to the Truth of Self-Reliance
The ancient sutras state clearly: We are born alone and we die alone; we come into this world alone and we depart alone. The fruits of our actions, whether bitter or sweet, must be borne by us alone. There is no one who can act as a substitute for our own karmic destiny. This is the stark, undeniable truth of our existence.
It is my sincere hope that everyone reading these words will find a moment of true awakening. You must rise up through your own strength. While the power of the Buddha is vast and can provide infinite support and , everything ultimately depends on your own effort. Do not fall into the trap of relying on others to do the work that only you can do. Only by taking full ownership of your practice can you receive the true benefits of the Buddha’s teachings. Only then can you find liberation, rediscover your true self, and attain the freedom to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Namo Amituofo.
