Teachings from Namo Amituofo
Recorded by Venerable HaiZe on February 11, 2023
What is it that you truly seek when you embark upon the path? It is a question that every practitioner must ask themselves with sincerity and clarity. To walk this path is to commit oneself to a journey of profound transformation, one that leads not only to personal liberation but to the salvation of all beings.
The Four Pillars of Pure Land Practice
Your practice in the Pure Land school is built upon four fundamental objectives. Each one is a vital step toward the ultimate goal of returning to your original nature:
- To realise your true nature: This is the that reveals the inherent wisdom and purity within your own heart.
- To fulfil your wish to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss: This is the destination where you can continue your practice without the obstacles of this world.
- To serve all beings: You must strive to help others chant Namo Amituofo, so that they too may realise their true nature and be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
- To spread the Pure Land teachings: It is your duty to ensure that more beings come to know Namo Amituofo, the power of the six-character name, and the beauty of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
By sharing these teachings, you help others make the vow to be reborn in the West, achieve liberation from the cycle of rebirth, and permanently escape the ocean of suffering.
The Necessity of Diligent Practice
These goals are not easily attained; they are not gifts that fall into your lap without effort. Every single one of these objectives requires you to invest significant time and energy. You must engage in diligent practice, for the path to Buddhahood is a rigorous one.
Unless you have already realised your true nature and attained Buddhahood, you are still bound by the laws of cause and effect. You must work to transform your , undergo deep purification, and resolve the conflicts with your . Only by resolving these past grievances can you move forward without being hindered by the debts of your previous lives.
Body-Mind-Spirit Purification
Through your persistent and diligent practice, your Body-Mind-Spirit will gradually become purified. It is only through this process of cleansing that you create the opportunity to realise your true nature. This purification is the key to ensuring that, when the time comes for you to depart this world, you can chant Namo Amituofo without any obstacles.
With a purified mind, you may even gain the ability to know the time of your passing in advance, fulfilling your wish to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. In the highest stages of practice, you may even attain the freedom of life and death, gaining the ability to freely travel to and from the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss to continue your work of saving others.
The Holistic Path of Faith, Vows, and Practice
The Pure Land path requires more than just faith in yourself or faith in the Buddha. To achieve your vows, you must look beyond your own personal liberation. You must also hold the intention to help all beings achieve the same success. When you make this Ultimate Vow and act upon it, you are truly walking the path of a practitioner.
By upholding Faith, Vows, and Practice, you will receive the Buddha's , which will empower you to overcome the various situations and challenges that arise during your practice. Believe in this path, hold fast to your vows, and put them into action. When you realise your true nature and attain Buddhahood, you will join the Buddha in the work of saving the world and guiding all beings to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This is what it means to walk the path of true perfection.
