During the , we gather to invite spirits and listen to the profound teachings of the Buddha. On this day, we reflect upon the essence of the One Heart, a state of being that is essential for every practitioner who seeks to return to the of Ultimate Bliss. This discourse was recorded by the chief writer, Venerable HaiZe.

The Fragmented Hearts of the World

In this mundane world, every person possesses their own heart, and it is exceedingly rare to find a group of individuals who share a truly unified heart. Even when there appears to be a shared purpose, it is often tainted by the subtle, creeping influence of self-interest and personal gain. This fragmentation of the heart prevents us from achieving the clarity and focus required for spiritual liberation. We are often pulled in many directions by our worldly desires, making it nearly impossible to maintain a singular, selfless intent.

The Singular Focus of the Pure Land Path

In contrast, the practitioner of the Pure Land path holds only one heart. This is not a heart of division, but a heart of total dedication. The practitioner’s sole objective is to save themselves and to save all other beings, helping them to leave suffering behind and attain rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This is the core of our practice. It is a path of that transcends the petty concerns of the ego. While some may find this commitment daunting and choose to retreat when the path becomes difficult, those who are able to accept this heart and walk the path of the Pure Land have already fulfilled the most fundamental requirement of our practice: the Vow.

The Vow as the Engine of Progress

The Vow is the primary driving force behind all spiritual progress. It is the fuel that propels us forward through the challenges of samsara. When you possess a sincere Vow, you possess the power to overcome any obstacle. This Vow is not merely a wish; it is a profound commitment to the truth. If this Vow can be maintained without change—if it remains constant in quality and quantity—then it manifests as meditative concentration. This state of unwavering focus is the hallmark of a true practitioner.

Cultivating the Unchanging Heart

Such a person must surely possess deep and profound good roots from past lifetimes. By taking the as the foundation of their life, they naturally allow meditative concentration to give rise to wisdom, eventually entering the state of an awakened being. We must strive to keep our hearts pure and our Vows firm, ensuring that our journey toward the Western Pure Land remains steady and true. By doing so, we align ourselves with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, moving ever closer to the realisation of our original nature.
