The Power of Sincerity and Respect
Teachings from Master Xuanzang
Recorded on February 28, 2019

The Foundation of a Pure Heart
Sincerity and respect are among the most noble virtues of humanity. These qualities are highly regarded across the teachings of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. In the Buddha’s teachings, we understand that all dharmas are mind-only, meaning that the state of our heart is the true centre of our existence. When you possess a heart of genuine respect and reverence for others, your sincerity naturally manifests in your outward demeanour. This outward expression of sincerity and respect is not merely a social grace; it is the reflection of a disciplined body, mind, and spirit, and it is what we commonly refer to as true cultivation.
The Measure of Our Progress
There is a profound truth in the saying: one part sincerity brings one part benefit, while ten parts sincerity bring ten parts benefit. This is not a mere platitude; it is a reality of the spiritual path. All aspects of the Buddha’s teachings must be sought through a heart of absolute sincerity and respect. Consider the monastics of ancient times who sought the supreme to break through their ego-attachment. In their quest for the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, they would travel across vast distances, wearing out their straw sandals, yet they never ceased their journey. This was a testament to their unwavering, resolute heart. Even upon reaching their destination, they were often subjected to rigorous trials:
- They might be left waiting outside the temple gates for days without being granted entry. They endured the biting cold, the scorching heat, and the pangs of hunger. They often faced ridicule, mockery, and harsh verbal abuse from others.
Only after enduring such trials were they finally permitted to see the great masters to seek guidance. Many of these practitioners attained through such profound dedication.
Polishing the Mirror of the Soul
These trials were not meant to cause suffering, but to polish the practitioner’s heart until it reached the pinnacle of sincerity. Only a heart of ultimate sincerity can break through the heavy layers of and the dust of the mundane world. It is through this process that one washes away the stains of impurity and allows the true light of one's self-nature to shine forth. We remember the story of the Second Patriarch, Master Huike, who sought the First Patriarch, Bodhidharma. To demonstrate his absolute sincerity in seeking the Dharma, he offered his own arm. When Bodhidharma asked him to bring forth his heart, Huike had an immediate, profound realization. In that moment of total surrender, he let go of his mind and attained the state of Awakening.
The Dangers of Arrogance
Conversely, if one is burdened by heavy karmic obstacles, if one is plagued by constant afflictions and ignorance, or if one relies on power to suppress others, one is likely to be filled with arrogance. Such individuals find it difficult to cultivate a heart of sincerity and respect. Consequently, they lose out on the greatest benefits of the practice and squander their . Once these blessings are exhausted, they will inevitably face the suffering of illness and hardship. We must understand the true meaning of these virtues:
- True
- : This means being genuine, without a trace of falsehood or pretense.Sincere
- : This means a heart that is pure, clear, and free from messy thoughts.Respect: This is expressed through the physical act of joining one's palms and bowing, reflecting a heart that is humble and real.
In this world, people often place their ego above all else. They have forgotten the meaning of sincerity and respect, which is a great tragedy. We are all Buddhas by nature, yet because of our delusions and attachments, we cannot realise it. Without a heart of sincerity and respect, it is truly difficult to resonate with the Buddha-heart or to align oneself with the Buddha-vow.
The Path to the
