The Compassionate Call to Deliverance

Why is it essential to perform for our ? As our spirits transition through the cycle of rebirth, we have formed both positive and negative affinities with countless sentient beings throughout our many lives. We have helped others, but we have also caused them harm. Chao Du is the act of helping all these beings who share a karmic connection with us to find liberation. This is the responsibility of every practitioner, and it is the highest expression of .

Every individual carries immeasurable and boundless karmic creditors accumulated over accumulated lifetimes. These beings exist in other spaces, waiting patiently for the moment we obtain a human body so that they may enter our physical form to follow us. Our lives are governed by the laws of and cause and effect. We are often caught in the currents of destiny, where these karmic creditors seek to settle old scores and repay the suffering they once endured. When we obtain a human body, they immediately enter our physical space to begin their pursuit.

Unravelling the Threads of Karmic Debt

The illnesses and pains we experience in our bodies are neither accidental nor inevitable. Many people mistakenly believe that sickness is a natural occurrence or merely a sign of physical aging and degeneration. In truth, this is not the case. Most illnesses are caused by our own personality traits and habits, which serve as a signal to the beings we have harmed in the past. When these beings awaken within our physical space, they begin to seek retribution, which manifests as the physical ailments we suffer.

Therefore, Chao Du is of vital importance. If we do not perform Chao Du for these karmic creditors and all sentient beings with whom we have an affinity, they will continue to wait in the shadows of other spaces. Furthermore, we will eventually be forced to repay these karmic debts ourselves. From another perspective, performing Chao Du is a duty and an obligation. It is a manifestation of the compassion we must cultivate. By doing our utmost to save all beings, we ensure that our current human life is not wasted and that we do not squander this magnificent opportunity to practise the . Namo Amituofo.

Guidance on the Path of Reconciliation

1. How many Chao Du sessions should I perform to show proper respect to my karmic creditors?

Chao Du is an expression of your sincere heart, and it should be performed according to your financial capacity. Before you commit to the practice of Chao Du, you must first listen to the sutras. Listening to the teachings allows these beings to understand the importance of leaving your body and seeking liberation. Therefore, listening to the sutras is not just for your own benefit; it is also for the benefit of the beings residing within you. The most important element is to approach the Chao Du ceremony with a heart of repenting, a willingness to change your personality traits, and a genuine desire to help these beings find liberation. You must seize the opportunity provided by the presence of Namo Amituofo and the powerful Chao Du performed by Practitioner Su. Communicate with these beings, grasp this magnificent opportunity for liberation, and cease the cycle of suffering in the six realms of existence.

2. Why does Chao Du seem effective for some but not for others?

Chao Du is a process of reconciliation with sentient beings; it requires that you simultaneously change yourself. For some, the effects are immediate, while others may require a hundred or even a thousand sessions before their karma is visibly resolved. This difference depends on the intensity of your personal practice and the degree to which you have changed your personality. Another reason is that our karma from accumulated lifetimes is arranged in batches. Because we all have so many karmic creditors, we should seize every opportunity to have them delivered through the compassionate blessing of the Buddha. If your financial situation allows, you should strive to resolve the sins created over past lives. Practising the Dharma and performing Chao Du must go hand in hand; this is the only way to follow the Truth.

3. Why must a deceased person undergo eight sessions of Chao Du to have their spirit lifted?

Every person has immeasurable and boundless karmic creditors from accumulated lifetimes. According to the compassionate teachings of Namo Amituofo, the merit generated from eight sessions of Chao Du for the deceased—covering their parents, teachers, and karmic creditors from many lives—is sufficient to rescue their spirit from the cycle of rebirth. This merit is necessary not only as a sign of respect for their karmic creditors but also because the Buddha requires this foundation of merit to properly save the deceased and their creditors according to the Dharma.

4. How should I handle the disapproval of family and friends regarding Chao Du?

Everyone has different Causal Conditions when it comes to learning and believing in the Buddha. Whether you receive praise or criticism, you should maintain a calm and positive mindset. This is a test of your practice—a test to see if your heart is firm and unshakable. Learn to avoid conflict with your family and friends; handle the situation with harmony and completeness. Focus on truly changing yourself from within, reflecting the transformation that comes from your practice. In the future, the positive changes they see in you will be the best way to demonstrate the truth of the Dharma.
