The Foundation of Reverence

On the thirtieth of June, 2019, during the ' the Life-Heart, Living a New Life' Body-Mind-Spirit seminar and the held in Yilan, Namo Amituofo provided profound guidance on the nature of reverence. We are taught to respect Heaven and Earth, to honour the spirits, and to pay homage to our ancestors. This rite of devotion is a fundamental practice for all who seek to walk the path of the Buddha.

The Clarity of the Heart

When you perform the rite of devotion, you must ask yourself: Is my heart truly clear? Many people perform the outward motions of bowing and offering, yet their hearts remain clouded. They do not truly see the beings they are honouring. If you do not understand the nature of the beings you encounter, you cannot truly understand the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. Without this clarity, it is difficult to realise your true self or comprehend the deeper truths of the universe.

The Oneness of All Beings

True devotion is realised when you understand that all things possess a spirit. You must respect this spirit from within your own heart. When you see the suffering of others, do not view it as something separate from yourself. You must awaken to the reality that all beings are one with you. When you perceive the suffering of others, you are seeing the reflection of the cycle of rebirth. You must return to the ultimate truth and find your way back to your true self.

Beyond the Form of Ritual

Do not let your practice become a hollow ritual of form. If you perform the rites but your actions do not reflect the truth, you have not yet understood the essence of devotion. You must view all things as part of a single, unified whole. Treat every being as you would treat yourself, and seek the truth with sincerity. By doing so, you will move from confusion to awakening, from wrong paths to the Right Way, and from impurity to purity. Namo Amituofo.

This discourse was recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Practitioner Shi Faxi.
