The Modern Craving for Efficiency

In our contemporary society, there is an overwhelming emphasis on efficiency, convenience, speed, and tangible results. We are conditioned to believe that the most valuable path is the one that allows us to achieve the highest level of productivity and success in the shortest amount of time. It is only natural that practitioners of the often carry this same mindset into their spiritual lives. They understand that is the ultimate goal, and they naturally desire to find the most effective method to reach that state of as quickly as possible.

While we are aware that true spiritual practice requires one to walk the path step by step, with feet firmly planted on the ground, the allure of a shortcut remains strong. We know the ancient wisdom that there is no such thing as a free lunch; we understand that for every measure of effort we sow, we shall reap a corresponding measure of harvest. These are fundamental truths that any intelligent student of the Buddha can grasp immediately upon hearing them. However, the question remains: are we truly capable of putting this into practice? Deep within our hearts, we cannot help but yearn for a way to reach Awakening in the shortest possible time, using the fastest method available.
