The Significance of Early Awakening
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju

The Virtue of Early Rising
Rising early is a practice of great merit. Firstly, it reflects the state of one's heart. When a practitioner fears that tasks may be delayed or neglected, they rise early to prepare everything in advance. This diligence ensures that no details are overlooked, and it is a clear sign of a responsible and conscientious spirit. By preparing oneself before the day begins, one demonstrates a commitment to the path that is both orderly and sincere.
The Morning Service at Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre
At the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, the morning service is a fundamental part of our daily practice. It begins promptly at two-fifteen in the morning with prostrations. It is my sincere hope that by this time, the fourfold assembly of disciples is already present at their respective positions, ready to begin.
The daily practice commences with the ritual of offering three prostrations to the Buddha. If you can focus your entire heart and mind on these prostrations during the morning service, you will find it to be a powerful time for the following:
- Dissolving and clearing away obstacles that hinder your progress.
- Receiving the illumination of the Buddha’s light.
- Gaining the strength of the Buddha’s to energise your body, mind, and spirit.
Ancient Methods for Overcoming
If you find yourself feeling drowsy upon rising, do not let it hinder your practice. Use pure water to wash your face; this simple act can help you regain clarity. If you still feel sleepy, use pure water to wash your head and eyes. This is a traditional method passed down by the ancestral masters, specifically designed to awaken the mind, refresh the face, and clear the eyes, ensuring that you are fully present for your spiritual duties.
The Path to
When a practitioner rises in the morning and remains clear and alert, with the name of Namo Amituofo filling their heart and ears, they enter a state of profound purity. In this state, the head is clear and untainted by the defilements of the world. One is free from delusion, discrimination, and attachment, and there is no trace of anger. As the surrounding environment remains in deep stillness, the Buddha-name flows continuously, pouring into the ears and permeating the very core of one's being.
When your heart is stable and peaceful, whether you are prostrating, chanting the name of Namo Amituofo, or reciting the Sutras, you become highly receptive. Through the power of the Buddha’s blessings and the radiance of the Buddha’s light, your inherent awareness becomes easy to reveal and clarify. This is when you are most likely to have moments of profound insight—the precious opportunity for early awakening and the realisation of your true nature.
The Danger of Drowsiness
However, if you allow yourself to fall into a state of drowsiness or lethargy during your daily practice, or if you drift into a trance-like state, your spirit becomes obscured. When your is clouded, how can your inherent awareness manifest? How can you find the path to true understanding? For every practitioner, the morning hours are a vital window of time. You must seize this opportunity every single day with active and persistent effort. By doing so, you will find that your daily practice transforms into a series of profound and life-changing experiences. Namo Amituofo.
