The Original Intent of the Kasaya

Shakyamuni Buddha offers these profound teachings regarding the monastic robes worn by the community at Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre. The traditional tattered kasaya was originally established by the Buddha as a skilful method to help practitioners break through the heavy bonds of greed and attachment to worldly desires. It was a tool for liberation, not an end in itself. However, as the is transmitted through the ages, the original meaning can often become obscured. Even if the outward form remains, the spirit may decline, rendering the practice ineffective. How can we allow such a decline to persist in these times? We must reflect deeply on the essence of the True Teachings.

The Purity of White

Today, in accordance with the Great Dharma, we have adjusted our attire to white. This pure white colour symbolises the inner coolness and the majestic state of the mind. It is a reflection of a heart that is clear, calm, and untainted. This is what the Buddha hopes to see in the monastic community. To purify the dust of the world, one must truly transcend the world. We must not allow the attachment to colours to corrupt this state of non-attachment. By wearing white, we manifest the purity of the Dharma and ensure that our internal state remains as clear as the colour we wear.

A New Face for the Monastic Community

While the base is a pure, single white, we have introduced a coffee-coloured outer robe for when we interact with the world. This represents a new face, a new Dharma appearance, and a renewed monastic community. It is a fresh beginning for Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre as we lead all beings on a direct path to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. May all who see this new appearance be reminded of the purity of the Dharma and the urgency of our mission to return to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This message was received by the Chief Writer on 20 June 2017.
