The Supreme Offering of the Dharma
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
The Weight of Material Support
Providing for the needs of a practitioner—such as their food, clothing, shelter, and daily travel—is a noble act. By ensuring their physical body is nourished, you allow them to focus entirely on their spiritual practice. When a practitioner is able to dedicate their life to , attaining Buddhahood, and saving countless suffering beings, the merit generated from your support is truly immense.
However, there is a profound responsibility that comes with this. If the practitioner fails to achieve the Way in this lifetime, the karmic debt is severe. As the ancient teachings warn, a single grain of rice offered by a donor is as heavy as Mount Sumeru. If the practitioner does not attain the Way, they will be burdened by this debt, potentially having to repay it in future lives through suffering or by taking on animal forms.
The Supremacy of Offering
There are many ways to offer, each with its own significance. For instance, offering fresh flowers before the Buddha is a beautiful gesture that brings the karmic reward of a dignified appearance. Yet, among all forms of offering, the Dharma offering is supreme.
What constitutes a Dharma offering? It is the act of sharing the truth with others. This includes introducing others to the name of Namo Amituofo, sharing the wonders of the of Ultimate Bliss, and encouraging others to chant the name of the Buddha. These actions are incredibly magnificent and carry the power to transform lives.
The Path of Eternal Light
If you make a sincere vow to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and succeed in that goal, you will enter a realm where Namo Amituofo is constantly lecturing on the Dharma. There is no interruption in the teachings. Within that environment of immeasurable light and immeasurable life, you will have the perfect conditions to continue your practice until you attain Buddhahood.
It is said that even if one were to make offerings to sages as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, it would not compare to the merit of firmly and courageously seeking the true . This is the essence of the Dharma offering. If you can practise diligently, hold the name of the Buddha, accept these teachings with faith, and put them into action, you will achieve Awakening. By attaining Buddhahood, you will gain the ability to save countless suffering beings. This merit is far deeper and more extraordinary than any material offering could ever be.
