The Restless Tide of the Mind
The human heart is often like the surface of the ocean, where waves rise and fall in endless succession. We see whitecaps cresting high, one after another, driven by the winds of our desires and attachments. We must ask ourselves: when will our hearts finally become like a tranquil sea, calm and clear, without a single ripple of disturbance? This is the state of a pure and awakened heart.
The Depth of True Stillness
My children, when you engage in your spiritual practice, you must strive to maintain this state of stillness 24/7. It should be as constant and deep as a tranquil sea. True stillness is not merely found on the surface; it must extend to the very depths of your being. When the surface is calm, the depths must also be free from turbulence. This is what it means to possess a truly tranquil heart.
Consider the creatures that live within the sea. They move gently through the water, and even when they swim near the surface, their presence does not disrupt the profound stillness of the ocean’s heart. In the same way, if your heart is pure, you can move through the world while your inner nature remains unmoved. Even if your physical body is active, your heart remains still, and this purity is never compromised by the external world.
Navigating the Winds of Life
The surface of the sea and the depths below are distinct, yet connected. When a great wind blows, it may stir the surface into towering white waves, but remember that the cause of these waves is the wind, not the water itself. Even when the surface is agitated, the depths of the sea remain a tranquil sanctuary. Once the wind passes, the surface naturally returns to its original state of perfect calm.
In your practice, you must learn to let go and not dwell on anything. By not dwelling, you attain true freedom. Even when the external environment brings storms and crashing waves, you must ensure that your heart remains unmoved. Do not let these external circumstances disturb your inner peace. When you are able to transform the environment rather than being turned by it, you have achieved the state of self-mastery and natural, effortless existence.
The Wisdom of the Buddha
The heart of a Buddha or is exactly like this tranquil sea. There is nothing in the entire universe that can disturb such a heart. It is clear, luminous, and reflects everything with absolute precision. Because the Buddha sees all beings in their various forms, understands the laws of and cause and effect, and perceives the nature of their actions, the work of saving beings happens naturally and spontaneously.
This is how the Buddha saves beings in this world, and it is the way of the Buddha throughout the entire Realm. May you all cultivate this tranquil heart, so that you may leave suffering behind and find the ultimate happiness of the .
