The Transformation of Namo Amituofo Village
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
Recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
In a quiet, humble village, there lived two friends named Dingding and Dangdang. Though they grew up in the same environment, their natures were as different as the morning sun and the evening shadow. Dingding was gentle, accommodating, and possessed a heart of natural kindness. Because of his warm and approachable demeanour, everyone in the village felt at ease in his presence. In contrast, Dangdang was rigid and stubborn. He held strong opinions that often clashed with others, making it difficult for him to maintain harmonious relationships. Consequently, while the villagers naturally gravitated toward Dingding, they often kept their distance from Dangdang.
The Divergent Paths of Two Friends
Despite their differences, both were of a similar age and both had the opportunity to listen to the sutras and hear the . They were fortunate to be in the presence of a true spiritual friend. Interestingly, when Dingding smiled, his face would light up with genuine , and when Dangdang saw his friend’s happiness, he too would soften and offer a smile. It was only in these fleeting moments of shared laughter that the two appeared to be truly alike.
However, their attitudes toward the path of cultivation were vastly different. Dingding sought the Dharma with a sincere and humble heart, always eager to draw closer to the true spiritual friend. Dangdang, on the other hand, was indifferent. To him, listening to the teachings was a matter of little consequence; he felt no particular need for the guidance of a true spiritual friend.
The Call of the Holy Name
One day, they encountered the true spiritual friend. Upon seeing them, the master immediately greeted them by saying, "Namo Amituofo." Both friends were momentarily stunned, standing in silence, unsure of how to respond to such a profound greeting. The true spiritual friend then gently encouraged them, saying, "The two of you should also offer the greeting of Namo Amituofo." Hearing this, they quickly and respectfully pressed their palms together and recited the Holy Name, "Namo Amituofo."
In that very moment of meeting, the true spiritual friend saw clearly into the depths of their differing characters. Dingding, having recited the Holy Name, bowed and said, "I am here to sincerely seek the Dharma. Please, Master, provide me with your guidance and teachings."
The true spiritual friend smiled warmly at Dingding and replied, "Since you have asked, I shall answer. If there is no question, there is no answer. For one who seeks the truth, you must ensure that the name of Namo Amituofo never leaves your lips, your ears, or your heart. If you can maintain this practice 24/7, never letting the Buddha-name cease, you will surely find that after some time, your life will be transformed."
The Power of Persistent Practice
Dangdang remained silent, yet he observed everything. Dingding, filled with concern for his friend, urged him, "Do you not have any questions? The true spiritual friend is right here before us; you should take this opportunity to ask for guidance." But Dangdang shook his head and replied, "I have no questions, and there is nothing I wish to ask." With a final, compassionate smile, the true spiritual friend departed.
From that day forward, Dingding followed the instructions of the true spiritual friend with unwavering devotion. He practised chanting Namo Amituofo 24/7. No matter what anyone said to him, his only response was the Holy Name, "Namo Amituofo." At first, the villagers were confused and did not know how to respond to him. However, as they watched Dingding, they noticed that his face and his smile were becoming increasingly compassionate and radiant. Moved by his transformation, the villagers began to follow his example. Soon, the sound of "Namo Amituofo" could be heard throughout the village, day and night.
The Golden Light of
Months later, the true spiritual friend returned to the village. When the villagers, including Dingding and Dangdang, saw the master, they all respectfully pressed their palms together and chanted, "Namo Amituofo." The master responded in kind. At that moment, everyone witnessed a miracle: with every syllable of the Holy Name the master recited, golden light poured from his mouth. When he reached the word "Buddha," his entire body radiated a brilliant, golden light as he looked upon them with a gentle smile.
Overcome with awe and deep emotion, the villagers knelt and prostrated, their voices rising in a continuous, heartfelt chorus of "Namo Amituofo." Dangdang, who had been the only one in the village to resist the practice, was so moved by the sight of the golden light that he could no longer hold back. He knelt down, pressed his palms together, and for the first time, truly recited, "Namo Amituofo."
Seeing this, the true spiritual friend beamed with a look of profound satisfaction and responded to Dangdang with a single, resonant "Namo Amituofo." At that instant, Dangdang burst into tears. The master projected the brilliant golden light from his own being onto the villagers, and onto Dingding and Dangdang, filling them with an indescribable sense of peace and grace. The villagers were moved to tears, bowing and prostrating in gratitude. When the light finally faded, the true spiritual friend was gone, leaving behind a village forever changed. From that day on, the village became known as Namo Amituofo Village, and the sound of the Holy Name has never ceased, echoing through the air 24/7.
