The True Skill of Practice: Cultivating an Unmoved Mind
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju

Maintaining an unmoved mind is the true skill of practice. It is the bedrock upon which all genuine cultivation rests. Without this stability, our efforts remain superficial, easily scattered by the winds of circumstance.
The Test of Daily Life
How do you respond when others point their fingers at you? When you hear words that are harsh, unpleasant, or fundamentally at odds with your own views, can you remain truly unmoved? Can you refrain from allowing anger or resentment to take root in your heart?
Consider the moments when you encounter people, objects, or situations that you either desperately wish to avoid or intensely crave to possess. In these moments, can you maintain a heart that is still and clear? Can you remain unmoved by the myriad external conditions and circumstances that life presents to you?
The Mechanics of a Moving Mind
If you have no mind, where would there be a mind to move? However, since you do have a mind, the question becomes: can you achieve the meditative concentration necessary to keep it unmoved? Can you maintain your composure so that your wisdom may finally manifest? If you lose your sense of balance and clarity, how can you expect wisdom to arise?
When your mind moves, it releases ripples of energy that affect your entire being. This movement is the primary cause of many spiritual afflictions:
- It attracts the weight of past , drawing it into your present reality. It invites to manifest, seeking the balance of past debts. It creates openings for attached spirits to influence your thoughts and actions. It reveals your inner weaknesses, making it impossible for you to be the master of your own life.
Ultimately, a moving mind leads you to create negative causes, taste the bitter consequences of those actions, and suffer greatly in the cycle of rebirth.
from the Dream
This cycle of suffering persists because you have allowed your mind to move, thereby losing the standard of judgment required to navigate the world. You easily drift away from the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, falling instead into the traps of . Many practitioners remain asleep, trapped within a dream, mistaking the false for the true. Because they move their minds in response to these illusions, they are willing to sink into the ocean of karma, suffering endlessly and regretting their choices when it is too late. You must be extremely cautious.
