The Mirror of Daily Life

No matter how long you have been studying the Buddha's teachings, your true level of practice is always visible in the present moment. You might wonder how one can measure their progress, but the answer lies in the immediate reality of your daily existence. Every single moment contains the essence of the Six Paramitas, which are the foundational virtues of a practitioner:

  • Generosity (Giving): The willingness to share and let go of attachments.
  • Discipline (): The commitment to living in accordance with the Truth.
  • Patience (Endurance): The ability to remain calm and steady amidst life's challenges.
  • Diligent Practice: The persistent effort to improve oneself without pause.
  • Meditation (Concentration): The cultivation of a still and focused mind.
  • Wisdom (Prajna): The clear insight into the nature of reality.

Furthermore, every moment encompasses the Three Learnings of Precepts, Samadhi, and Wisdom, as well as the depth of your skills in chanting Buddha's name. These qualities are not hidden; they are revealed in every gesture, every expression, and every aspect of your daily life—from the food you eat to the clothes you wear. Even a single word or a subtle change in your attitude reveals the state of your heart.

The Foundation of True Practice

Because your inner state is reflected in your outer conduct, your practice must be grounded and authentic. You must work on changing your ways from within, bit by bit, through every thought and intention. Do not merely go through the motions of practice; you must engage in real, sincere, and diligent work. Do not let your practice become sloppy or superficial, for a careless attitude will only hinder your progress.

Cultivating a Sensitive Awareness

If you can be careful and cautious in the most subtle matters, you will find that your heart becomes capable of perceiving the slightest changes in your thoughts and intentions. This is the manifestation of a sensitive and awakened awareness, which is a vital sign of progress in your practice. Once you have reached this level of clarity, you must continue to purify your heart and cultivate goodness. Do not allow your heart to become stained by the dust of the world, and do not let your sensitive awareness be obstructed.

By maintaining this vigilance, you will be able to assist your own journey toward becoming an awakened being. Remember the importance of every action: do not think that a small good deed is insignificant and therefore not worth doing, and do not think that a small evil act is harmless and therefore acceptable. Every action leaves a mark on your spirit. Stay true to the path, keep your heart pure, and continue to chant Namo Amituofo with sincerity.

Recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
