Venerable Sheng Yen speaks:
". I am Venerable Sheng Yen.
'The path of practice is synonymous with the path of life. It is not guaranteed to have massive, earth-shattering changes. The unchanging Truth—or what we might call the immutable law—is simply not giving up. Until you reach the final destination, the outcome remains uncertain...'
Looking back at the words of my teacher, the Elder Master Dongchu, I remember how I followed his instructions with absolute obedience. In those simpler times, people rarely harboured complex or convoluted thoughts; we simply knew how to listen. I held onto the idea of studying abroad with a singular, stubborn focus. I had a certain level of persistence regarding my academic pursuit of Buddhist studies. Now, with the clarity of hindsight, I realise that this was perhaps not entirely correct. I should not have been so attached to that persistence.
I have profound regarding the study of the Dharma. I know it is truly magnificent, and I have always yearned for it deeply. I loved to study diligently. In order to propagate the Dharma and to express the sentiments within my heart, I began to record my thoughts one by one. I do not even remember when I started this, but I hoped they would become books for the world to read.
Reflecting on the past, all these events feel as if they were unfolding just yesterday. Yet, all of this can never be reclaimed. I have completed this life, and looking back, it truly feels like nothing more than a drama—a fleeting game.
There is a saying: 'The one involved is confused, while the bystander is clear.' Please, remember this well. In the present moment, it is not certain that you—or even those closest to you—can clearly see the truth of a situation. Is it possible that you have encased yourself within a wall of the heart that you have constructed yourself? Whether this is true or not, you are the one who understands it best.
The path of practice is synonymous with the path of life. It is not guaranteed to have massive, earth-shattering changes. The unchanging Truth—or what we might call the immutable law—is simply not giving up. Until you reach the final destination, the outcome remains uncertain. It is difficult to judge whether the results or the effectiveness of your efforts are good or bad, and it is equally difficult to clarify them.
Today, I share these words with you all, and I encourage everyone to face their own path with courage. I hope that you will all face it with sincerity. Namo Amituofo."
