The Imperative of Spiritual

In the journey of the soul, there are certain commitments that demand our immediate and undivided attention. We often fall into the trap of believing that we have an abundance of time, yet the reality of our existence is far more fragile. Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju offers us a vital reminder that when it comes to the most essential aspects of our spiritual life, we simply cannot afford to wait.

To truly walk the path of the Buddha, one must embrace the following priorities with absolute urgency:

  • Purification: You must engage in the purification of your body, mind, and spirit without delay, as this is the foundation of all spiritual progress.
  • Diligent practice: Your commitment to your daily practice must be unwavering and consistent.
  • Rediscovering your true self: The search for your original nature is the most important quest of your life.
  • Vows for rebirth: You must firmly establish your vow to be reborn in the of Ultimate Bliss.
  • Buddha-recitation: You must strive to achieve the necessary concentration in chanting Namo Amituofo.
  • Saving beings: The mission to save the world and rescue suffering beings is a duty that begins now.
  • Accumulating merit: You must diligently accumulate virtue and merit through every thought, word, and deed.
  • Cultivating and wisdom: You must pursue the dual path of blessings and wisdom to ensure your spiritual growth.

The Relentless Pace of Impermanence

Why is this urgency so critical? It is because we are in a constant race against the forces of time, the reality of impermanence, and the pull of the six realms of rebirth. We must understand that these forces do not pause for our convenience. Your lifespan is not something that waits for you to be ready. Impermanence does not wait for you to finish your worldly tasks. Most significantly, the cycle of the six realms of rebirth is always waiting to draw us back into its suffering if we are not prepared.

Many practitioners spend their lives in a state of hesitation. They fail to realise their true nature before their time runs out. They chant the name of Namo Amituofo but fail to make the firm vow to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. When the end of life arrives and the truth of impermanence manifests, all worldly concerns vanish into nothingness. In that final moment, if you have not secured your path, you will find that you have gained nothing at all.

The Illusion of Tomorrow

Everything we learn and acquire in this world, aside from the seeds we plant in our and the we create, will eventually be left behind. We lose the precious opportunity to save ourselves or to help others find the path to liberation. We often hear people say, "I will begin my practice once my children are grown," or "I will focus on the when I retire and have more free time."

However, how many of these individuals ever reach that point? Many are struck by illness, hardship, or the sudden arrival of impermanence long before their children are grown or their retirement begins. They pass away without ever having had the chance to:

  • Listen to sutras and hear the Dharma.
  • Engage in the purification of their true self.
  • Practise diligent Buddha-recitation.
  • Make the sincere vow to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

Because they waited, they find themselves pulled back into the six realms of rebirth. They have squandered the rare and precious human body, losing the very causal conditions required to realise one's true nature and attain Buddhahood. This is a tragedy of the highest order.
