Recorded on February 26, 2018

This interview features Lay Practitioner Gu, who shares his profound insights on the erosion of moral integrity in the modern world. He discusses the critical necessity of restoring a genuine education of the heart to guide humanity back toward the path of righteousness. This conversation was recorded by the chief writer, Shi Faxin, on February 26, 2018.

Lay Practitioner Gu speaks:

"Namo Amituofo. When fame and profit manifest before us, not everyone possesses the strength to maintain their composure. Sometimes, even the slightest deviation from the path of virtue is enough to set one on a trajectory toward the darkness.

The Peril of Self-Justification

Each time we choose to forgive ourselves for these small, incremental deviations, we are essentially walking deeper into a valley from which there is no return. To put it bluntly, this is because the root of greed has not been severed. Even for those who have chosen the life of a monastic, this greed has not been completely eradicated. It remains a persistent shadow that follows us if we are not constantly vigilant in our practice.

The Superficiality of Modern Faith

In the present day, the Buddha’s teachings have often devolved into mere rituals of worship or the simple offering of incense money in exchange for a sense of safety. In reality, these external actions do nothing to change one's own destiny. Destiny, to speak plainly, stems from the human heart. It seems that there is no longer a true education of the heart available to us. What are we humans to do? This is a fundamental question we must all face.

Navigating the Path of Righteousness

The boundary between righteousness and evil seems increasingly unclear to many. While all religions teach people to be good, their reach is ultimately limited, and most people treat religion merely as a form of emotional comfort. A true education of the heart is what I, Lay Practitioner Gu, now consider to be of the utmost importance. Once all conditions are harmonised, I will certainly do my utmost to support this cause. Namo Amituofo."
