The Warmth of Diligence: Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
Teachings on Overcoming the Winter Chill
The Spirit of Unwavering Diligence
At the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Goombungee, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, the fourfold assembly of disciples currently finds itself in the midst of a harsh winter. With temperatures dropping below zero, the practitioners wake up in the biting, icy air long before the morning service begins at two-fifteen. By one-thirty in the morning, they are already in the Buddha hall, beginning their prostrations.
This act is a profound testament to the disciples' sincere desire to seek the . It shows that they are capable of overcoming the severe trials of the cold weather by arriving early to practise. Such dedication is not merely a physical feat; it is a manifestation of a heart that is truly committed to the path of .
Transforming the
When the karmic creditors residing within the bodies of these practitioners witness such extraordinary diligence, they are filled with astonishment. They see the sincerity of the disciples and the effort being made to endure the freezing conditions for the sake of the Dharma. If the practitioners can maintain this level of consistency, it often moves these karmic creditors to a state of willingness to resolve past conflicts and grievances with the disciples.
The cold, which might otherwise be seen as a hindrance, becomes a catalyst for harmony. By enduring the physical discomfort, the practitioner demonstrates a resolve that touches the very spirits who seek retribution, offering them a chance to find peace alongside the practitioner.
Practical Methods for Cold Weather Practice
During your daily practice, you may wonder how to effectively overcome the challenges posed by the freezing weather. Several members of the fourfold assembly have already adopted specific techniques to maintain their focus and warmth:
- Fast Prostrations: By increasing the pace of your bowing, you generate physical warmth that helps to counteract the biting cold of the morning.
- Loud Chanting: When you chant the name of Namo Amituofo with a strong, resonant voice, you effectively overcome the tendency to become drowsy or to drift into the space of confusion.
- Kneeling Recitation: When reciting the Sutras, adopting a kneeling posture helps to keep alert, preventing the combination of cold and natural from pulling you into a state of lethargy.
Everything Resides Within the Heart
Ultimately, everything depends upon the heart. If your heart is sincere, you will naturally be able to overcome the cold in your pursuit of the Dharma. This sincerity serves as a powerful inspiration, encouraging all disciples to move forward in their practice without ever retreating from their vows. When you successfully master your own heart, your practice will reach new heights of achievement. You will no longer be trapped by the environment or the climate, and you will remain undisturbed by external conditions.
This natural expression of your practice is the clearest sign of a firm and earnest heart. We should be grateful for the cold weather, as it provides each of you with a precious opportunity to become even more diligent in your spiritual cultivation.
The Warmth of the Buddha-Light
At this very moment, Namo Amituofo is emitting a brilliant light to illuminate and warm the entire assembly. While your physical body may not immediately perceive this warmth, the beings residing within you are fully aware of it. As you continue your prostrations, they may wish to leave your body and be led by Namo Amituofo to the Western Pure Land. As you chant, they may follow the assembly into the golden light. As you recite the Sutras, they may enter the Buddha-light and finally be liberated from their days of suffering. Namo Amituofo.
