Transforming the Demon Nature
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
The Origins of the Demon Nature
The demon crowds are a specific category of beings within the spiritual realms. In most cases, these beings have suffered deep trauma while they possessed a human body. Because they did not receive proper guidance or the benefit of Buddhist education, they allowed their personalities to become distorted by intense negative emotions. They lived their lives in a state of constant dissatisfaction and anger, and upon the death of their physical bodies, they transitioned into the Demon Realm. In other instances, these beings may have originated from environments or planets that are inherently dominated by demon energy, and thus, they naturally became part of the demon crowds.
The Duality of Buddha and Demon
Where there is the Buddha, there is also the demon. These two states represent fundamentally different ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving. The Buddha represents the state of ultimate purity and absolute Goodness, whereas the demon represents the state of extreme impurity and profound evil. If one harbours intense negative tendencies, it becomes very easy to trigger the demon nature and fall into sync with the demon crowds. This occurs when one is consumed by the : Greed, Anger, Ignorance, Arrogance, and Doubt. Furthermore, when one possesses an overwhelming desire for the : Wealth, Sexual Pleasure, Fame, Food, and Sleep, one creates the conditions for the demon nature to take root.
The Path of Transformation
However, there is always hope for change. If a being within the demon crowds has the opportunity—either before entering the Demon Realm or while they still possess a human body—to listen to the sutras and hear the , they can begin to change. By accepting Buddhist education, they can come to understand the laws of and cause and effect. They begin to realise the suffering caused by their negative actions and the profound damage these actions inflict upon their own body, mind, and spirit. When they are willing to change their personality traits and embrace the Ten Good Deeds, they can begin to break free from the cycle of negativity:
- They learn to abandon the Five Poisons: Greed, Anger, Ignorance, Arrogance, and Doubt.
- They learn to detach from the Five Desires: Wealth, Sexual Pleasure, Fame, Food, and Sleep.
By choosing this path, they have the opportunity to turn away from the wrong path and return to the right path.
The Ultimate Rescue
Those among the demon crowds who possess a greater store of may be fortunate enough to be saved by the Buddha. They can come to recognise Namo Amituofo, learn of the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, and understand the vastness of the Dharma Realm. They begin to grasp the magnificent power of chanting Buddha's name. Through this practice, they can transform their very nature. They shift from a demon nature to a nature of Goodness, entering the path of the virtuous, and eventually, they transition onto the Buddha's path. By engaging in diligent practice and making the sincere vow to seek rebirth in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, they gain the precious opportunity to attain Buddhahood. Namo Amituofo.
