Vibrations and Meditative Concentration
Teachings from Master Xuanzang

The Invisible Web of
Vibrations are invisible and colourless, yet they permeate every corner of space. All communication and the transmission of information between all things rely on various forms of vibrations, such as light waves, sound waves, and water waves. However, the transmission of information between spirits occurs at a speed that far exceeds the need for physical media like sound, light, or water. In the time it takes to snap one's fingers, there are 3.2 billion thoughts generated. From this, one can begin to understand just how rapidly our thoughts arise.
Everything in the Realm is born from the mind. Our ideas, thoughts, and reflections create complex, intersecting vibrations that fill the space around us. These vibrations and intangible messages permeate every level of the six realms of existence. The higher the level of the realm, the purer and more benevolent the information becomes. As practitioners, we are aware of the various worlds that exist: the six realms of existence, the Four Sacred Realms, the Huazang World, the of Ultimate Bliss, and other worlds created by the vows of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Each of these realms possesses its own unique method of information transmission, distinct colours of light waves, and varying volumes of sound waves.
The Spectrum of Realms and Light
The nature of these realms is reflected in the light they emit. For instance, the human world is characterised by white light, while the heavenly realms are marked by yellow light. In contrast, the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss radiates the golden Buddha-light of Namo Amituofo. The purer and more virtuous a place is, the brighter the light it emits; the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is the most luminous realm of all. Conversely, the more polluted and turbid a place is, the dimmer its light; the hells are the darkest worlds of all.
Each realm also emits different sound waves, resulting in distinct auditory experiences. The sounds produced by beings in the ghost realm differ from those in the human world. Even within the human world, every individual’s voice is unique. In the animal realm, each species transmits different sound waves, creating a vast array of sounds. When beings in the hells suffer, they emit sounds of extreme agony. In contrast, the twenty-eight levels of the heavenly realms each have their own light and communication frequencies. As one ascends to the higher levels, such as the Four Dhyana Heavens, communication occurs entirely through the mind, requiring no sound at all.
The Silence of Higher Wisdom
The speed of thought transmission accelerates as one ascends through the levels of space. Namo Amituofo is the most honoured among lights, king among Buddhas. Therefore, the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, created by the great compassionate Forty-eight Vows of Namo Amituofo, is a truly magnificent place. In that realm, as soon as a thought arises, one can immediately understand the intentions of others. Thoughts manifest with incredible speed, and one’s wishes are fulfilled instantly, let alone the simple movement of one's hands or feet.
This is why the higher the level of the realm, the more it exists in an environment of light, purity, and silence. As one’s meditative concentration deepens, one dwells in a world of purity, concentration, and wisdom. The Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is precisely such a world of ultimate purity, ultimate concentration, and ultimate wisdom. The study of the Buddha’s teachings is primarily about cultivating the mind. By working from the heart, we aim to regulate and realise our true nature. In the context of the Buddha’s teachings, this is a natural process; a change in the mind can drive a change in the body, thereby adjusting physical issues.
Cultivating the Pure Land Path
How does one change the mind? One must put in the work through the , Concentration and Wisdom. Different Dharma gates offer various methods to achieve this goal. First, one must regulate the mind and uphold the Precepts. Subsequently, concentration and wisdom enter the gateway, leading to the manifestation of Prajna wisdom and the realisation of one's true nature. This is the state where all Buddhas walk the same path.
The methods of the Pure Land Dharma Gate include chanting the name of Namo Amituofo, performing prostrations to the Buddha, reciting the Sutras, and participating in Dharma assemblies for . By following these methods, and depending on one’s individual Faith, Vows, and Practice, one acts in accordance with the vow-power of Namo Amituofo. The more diligent and pure one’s practice, the more one can resonate with the Buddha-heart and the Buddha-vows. Meditative concentration is revealed through Faith, Vows, and Practice, continuing until one reaches a state of pure goodness and ultimately realises one's true nature.
The Guidance of Practitioner Su
The Pure Land path is a form of meditation in motion. It requires profound meditative concentration, which is cultivated through chanting, prostrations, reciting the Sutras, studying the teachings, and pure practice. It is the state of being unmoved internally while moving externally; regardless of the external environment, the purity, goodness, and meditative concentration of the inner heart remain unshaken. One must have the guidance of a true spiritual friend to ensure the learning is correct and to avoid deviations. The reason many fail to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss is often due to errors in their learning, a lack of firm vow-power, or interference from and attached spirits during the time of death.
Practitioner Su, a disciple at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, possesses thirty years of experience in Pure Land practice. With the body of an awakened being and the skill of meditation in motion, Practitioner Su teaches in this world to save beings and perform Chao Du. This is a rare and precious opportunity. Those who are connected by karmic affinity should cherish and grasp this chance!
