In the second chapter of the Infinite Life Sutra, titled 'The Virtues of Universal Worthy ,' there is a profound teaching: 'Washing away defilements.' To understand this, we must first look at the meaning of these words. Washing signifies the act of cleansing, while defilements refer to the dust, dirt, and impurities that cloud our original nature. In the context of our practice, this washing is the essential process of purifying the heart from the stains of our afflictions.

Cleansing the Veils of the Mind

What are these defilements that we must wash away? They are the afflictions that manifest as obstacles in our daily lives. These obstacles prevent us from seeing the truth and keep us trapped in the cycle of rebirth. The first and most critical step is to sever our view and thought afflictions. These are the deep-seated misconceptions and erroneous thoughts that we have carried for countless lifetimes. They act as a veil, distorting our perception of reality and leading us into confusion.

When we interact with our , we often find ourselves creating negative . This is because our reactions—our anger, our resentment, and our desire for retribution—are all born from these very afflictions. By failing to wash away these internal stains, we continue to act out of ignorance, thereby creating new negative karma. Therefore, the act of breaking through these affliction obstacles is not merely a personal relief; it is a vital strategy to prevent the creation of further suffering for ourselves and others.

The Wisdom of Letting Go

In our practice, we often find that our efforts to wash away these defilements are insufficient. Why is this? It is because we allow our minds to wander into unwholesome territory. We dwell on thoughts of 'I' and 'me,' we fixate on the faults and shortcomings of others, and we constantly replay the events of the past. By doing so, we are not washing away the dust; we are actively inviting more of it into our hearts.

To truly practice, one must learn the art of letting go. When you can see through the illusory nature of these thoughts and let go of your attachments, you begin to clear the path toward . If you choose to hold onto these thoughts, you are only adding new layers of dust to your heart. A wise person understands that dwelling on these things is not the path to liberation; it is the path of the not a wise person. Instead of cleansing the heart, such actions only serve to obscure the light of our true nature.

Illuminating the Path with the Sacred Name

How, then, can we allow our inner light to shine forth? The answer is simple yet profound: chant one Buddha's name to the end. From the moment you first develop the resolve to practice until the very moment you become a Buddha, this single Buddha-name is your constant companion and your greatest support. You must chant Namo Amituofo with sincerity and dedication.

When you chant Namo Amituofo, you are opening your heart to the Buddha's . For those who truly have faith in the Buddha, the Buddha-name acts as a powerful force of purification. As you chant Namo Amituofo, you will notice that your afflictions gradually diminish. With every sound of the Buddha-name, your heart becomes lighter, and your connection to the of Ultimate Bliss grows stronger. The fewer afflictions you carry, the higher your lotus grade will be upon your rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

The Urgent Call to Diligent Practice

Washing away defilements is the daily homework of every practitioner. It is not a task to be taken lightly or delayed. You must engage in diligent practice; do not be slow or hesitant. If you are slow, you will lose precious time, and there are countless suffering beings who are still waiting to be rescued. We must work tirelessly to leave suffering behind and find happiness, not only for ourselves but for all beings throughout the universe.
