What Does It Mean to Learn the Buddha's Path?
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju

Learning the Buddha's path and attaining Buddhahood is not something distant or unreachable. It is not a goal reserved for the few or the gifted. Rather, it depends entirely on your own heart—on your willingness and your commitment to learn. How many can truly say they have dedicated their lives to this pursuit?
The Heart of a Willing Student
There is an immeasurable and boundless amount to learn on this journey. The teachings are so vast that they cannot be fully spoken or exhausted. You must ask yourself: are you truly willing to learn? Are you truly committed to the path? If you are, you must cultivate the essential qualities of a practitioner:
- :
- Developing a heart that feels for all beings.Wisdom:
- Cultivating the clarity to see through the illusions of the world.Inclusivity: Learning to embrace all things with a spacious and accepting mind.
If you are willing to learn, you must also consider whether your affinity is sufficient. Can you encounter a true spiritual friend or a virtuous teacher to guide your steps? If you are fortunate enough to meet such a guide, your path to Buddhahood becomes clear and attainable. However, if you do not encounter such guidance, learning the Buddha's path becomes difficult, and attaining Buddhahood becomes even harder. This is why the presence of a true spiritual friend is of such vital importance.
The Path of Righteous Living
When we speak of learning the Buddha's path, what exactly are we learning? We are learning how to break free from the cycle of rebirth so that we never have to return to the six realms of existence again. We are learning to walk the righteous path without deviation. To do this, we must focus on several key areas of our daily practice:
- Right Knowledge and Right : Learning to recognise the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way
- .Humility:
- Learning to be humble and modest in all our interactions.Service:
- Learning to serve the community and always consider the needs of others before our own.Self-Reflection:
- Learning to look inward for answers rather than seeking them in the external world.Perspective:
- Learning to ignore the faults of others and instead focus on their goodness and their strengths.Suffer a Loss:
- Learning to let go of our ego and accept temporary losses for the sake of spiritual growth.Respect: Learning to show respect for all Buddhas
- in every moment.Purification: Learning to engage in purification and open up space within our hearts.
Returning to the Source
Ultimately, all of this learning is for one purpose: to find our way back to our true self and our Buddha-nature. By doing so, we can attain Buddhahood in this very lifetime. This is the path that allows us to save ourselves, save other beings, and guide them toward rebirth in the of Ultimate Bliss. It is our duty to ensure that the Pure Land teachings are propagated throughout the entire Dharma Realm. This record of the teachings was written by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
