A Final Departure to the Western Pure Land
An Interview with the Spirit of Lay Practitioner Su Qingxiang
This is a record of an interview with the spirit of Lay Practitioner Su Qingxiang, who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now resides in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon his transition from the human world, recorded by the chief writer, Shi Fajing, on November 5, 2021.
Lay Practitioner Su Qingxiang speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. After hesitating for a very long time, I have finally made the decision to seek rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Just moments ago, I, your disciple Su Qingxiang, arrived in the West. I am now sincerely performing prostrations before the Buddha, offering my deepest gratitude to Namo Amituofo and to Practitioner Su.
The Suddenness of Departure
I never imagined that I would leave the human world so suddenly. I was not prepared for anything at all, and yet, just like that, I was gone. I am so sorry to my wife, Suiping. I know that even now, her heart is filled with sorrow and she has not yet been able to emerge from the painful memories of the past.
Suiping, it is I, Qingxiang. I am truly sorry. This period of time has been so incredibly difficult for you! From the moment I drew my last breath, I was in a state of confusion and bewilderment. It was not until I was rescued by Practitioner Su that I began to listen to the sutras every day and receive the illumination of the Buddha’s light. Only then did I slowly begin to wake up. As I remembered you, my heart was filled with such deep remorse. I know that over these years, you must have suffered immensely, facing the crushing pressures of life and living each day in such hardship.
A Choice to Move Forward
Originally, I had not intended to come to the Western Pure Land. I still longed to see you one more time. But after much hesitation and reflection during this time, I thought to myself: it is time to go. I hope that you can truly let go of the past. The days we shared are gone and cannot be reclaimed; we can only move forward. You must, and I must—we both must.
I am no longer a person of the human world. Seeking rebirth in the Western Pure Land is the best path for me, and I know that you would want me to do this, would you not? I am doing very well now, and I hope that you and our children can also live well. When I look back at my own past, I realise that life is truly like a dream—yet it felt so incredibly real. You were my wife, and the children were my children. But now? You are no longer by my side, and I am here on my own. I suppose this is what they mean by a life that is like a dream.
A Message of Hope
I hope that you, too, can see this clearly. Do not take the affairs of this world too seriously. Let everything follow its natural course according to conditions. The most important thing is to chant Namo Amituofo every single day. In the future, seek your own rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. I will be here waiting for you.
With deepest respect, Su Qingxiang. Namo Amituofo."
