An Interview with Lay Practitioner Lin Yaowen
Recorded by Chief Writer Shi Faxin on March 3, 2023
This is a record of an interview with Lay Practitioner Lin Yaowen, who sought at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now resides in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon his transition from the cycle of rebirth to the Western Pure Land. Recorded by the chief writer, Shi Faxin, on March 3, 2023.
Lay Practitioner Lin Yaowen speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. I am now residing in a world of immense, brilliant light—the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This is a place I previously knew nothing about, and even if I had heard of it, I likely would not have believed it existed. Yet, here I am, dwelling within this magnificent realm. My heart feels profoundly peaceful. When I look back at the trivial matters I once obsessed over, I realise now that they were entirely unnecessary. They held no true value at all.
The Confusion of the Departed
When I passed away, I did not truly feel that I was dead. I kept wandering back and forth, desperately trying to return to my old life, to the familiar routines I had known for so long. I do not know how long I spent drifting in that state, but no matter how many times I tried, I could not return to the past. Then, a warm, radiant light appeared to lead me forward. I arrived at a peaceful temple, where I listened to the teachings of the . Suddenly, it dawned on me that I had lived my entire life in vain, missing the true purpose of existence.
A Message to My Descendants
In this state of profound peace, I find myself thinking of my family. Since I departed, you have all continued with your lives, each following your own path. I know that life is often a struggle for survival, a constant effort to make things better. Everyone works so hard, and it is truly exhausting.
My children, my grandchildren—the environment around you may be difficult, but your heart can change. If you spend your entire life caught in the same repetitive cycle, are you truly happy? If there is no gratitude or contentment in your heart, every single day will be a burden. You might find it strange that I am saying these things, or perhaps you feel that I have changed. But please understand, this is an insight I have gained at the cost of my own life. I do not wish for you, my children, to continue living in such chaos.
The Path Beyond Suffering
The path of birth, aging, sickness, and death—a path filled with struggle where, in the end, you can take nothing with you—I have already walked it. My heart aches to see you following the same difficult road. That is why, on this day of my rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, I must leave these words for you. I hope they will help you avoid unnecessary suffering.
I also wish to express my deepest gratitude to my wonderful daughter-in-law, Fengji, for arranging the Chao Du for me. It was through her efforts that I was able to leave suffering behind and undergo this transformation.
My life has come to an end, but your lives must continue. I hope that all of you will study the teachings of the Buddha. This is not merely for the sake of religious belief, but to fundamentally change the course of your own lives. Finally, I offer my sincere thanks to Practitioner Su and the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre.
With palms joined, Lin Yaowen."
