Dialogue with Namo Amituofo: Saving Infinite Spirits
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
Recorded on 21 May 2017
at the First Light of Dawn
Practitioner Shi Faxi bowed respectfully to Namo Amituofo. Having completed a morning of walking meditation, during which immeasurable and boundless sentient beings were saved through the power of , the practitioner humbly requested the compassionate teachings of Namo Amituofo.
Namo Amituofo offered these teachings: Every day, you must be diligent and persistent. At the break of dawn, you awaken to the task of saving infinite spirits, your hearts clear and equal in . Leading the multitude away from the dust of the world is a magnificent and indescribable undertaking. Without a place like this Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, it would be difficult for many to find their way to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
The Heavy Chains of Worldly Desire
In the mundane world, people rarely speak of the reality of death and the afterlife. They do not understand the necessity of liberation, nor do they know how to leave suffering behind to reach the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Instead, they are consumed by:
- Greed for life and attachment to the physical body.
- Greed for worldly dust and sensory desires.
- Attachment to family and loved ones.
- Greed for all material possessions.
They forget that everything is fundamentally empty. They forget their original nature, which possesses nothing and requires nothing. Because of this greed, they fall into the dust of the world and sink into the cycle of being reincarnated. Their original Buddha’s teachings are obscured by this thick layer of dust, rendering it invisible.
The Mirage of the Transient Self
The human body is not meant to be a vessel for indulgence in desires. It is a precious opportunity to cultivate the fruit of awakening, not to sink into confusion. Through thousands of lifetimes and countless transformations, it is difficult to escape this confusion. Even when one is reborn in a human body, one remains asleep to the truth.
What we call sentient beings are simply those who are lost in delusion. They are obstructed by their own false thoughts and trapped by their attachments, which breed further greed. Across the three periods of time, there is no end to this cycle. They are infinitely layered in immeasurable numbers, each clinging to their own perspective. Their space is defined by their thoughts; they go where their desires lead them, and their cravings keep them in a state of spiritual stupor.
The Radiant Path to Liberation
While alive, they are already lost; upon leaving this world, they are filled with panic. They follow whatever they see, and thus, they find it impossible to see the light of truth. They have been reincarnated for countless eons, following the patterns of their own . This is what we mean by sentient beings—a state that is truly frightening, yet they do not fear it.
To perform Chao Du for these beings is to save oneself. We are all of the same body; how can there be a distinction between you and me? Where do these spirits come from? They come from our own attachments. Where do they go? They depart only when we let go of . The mundane world and the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss are not separate; they are one. Where you stand right now, if your heart is the Buddha, then you are in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. If your heart is not the Buddha, then you are merely in the world of desires.
The Compassionate Vow of Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre
The distinction between the world of dust and the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss lies only in whether one is lost in delusion or clear in wisdom. When the mind of discriminations arises, it is merely a delusion—it is not the truth. It is not the wisdom of the spirit, but the anxious thoughts of the physical body, subject to birth, aging, sickness, and death. These thoughts flow like a river; when will they ever cease? Only when one awakens, as you have done this morning.
Suddenly, you hear the clear stream of the Buddha’s name. Who is chanting Buddha's name? The Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre emitted massive golden light that shook the earth. The six-syllable name is chanted, and every syllable flows forth, illuminating the heart and stirring the spirit. By breaking through these mental obstructions, one can finally depart from the cycle of rebirth. The infinite space of the universe is but one aspect of this.
One moment of unawareness has led to a thousand mornings of wandering. These spirits are in a perilous state—are you willing to help them? This morning, we have saved an immeasurable number of beings. The magnificence of this event is beyond imagination; it is the process to break through delusion and attain . I lead the way to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, accompanied by many Buddhas and great Bodhisattvas. Together, we assist in breaking through the confusion of consciousness, personally taking the hands of these beings. The Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre bears this responsibility: to lead all beings to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and to hope that you, my children, will awaken and practise diligently.
