From Canine Companion to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss
An Interview with Xue Li, the Beloved Dog of Lay Practitioner Peng Shaojin
This is a record of an interview with Xue Li, who sought at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. She now resides in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon her spiritual journey spanning over three hundred years. Recorded by the chief writer, Shi Faxi, on November 12, 2021.
Xue Li speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. Although I appeared in the form of a dog, I have now recovered my original self; my true form is that of a woman. Over three hundred years ago, I was a sister to Lay Practitioner Peng Shaojin, and our bond was incredibly deep. Tragically, I drowned in a great flood. Who would have expected that after so many lifetimes of being reincarnated, we would have the Causal Conditions to meet again? I am so grateful, and my heart is filled with such intense emotion!"
The Weight of Past
"In a past life, I had a craving for dog meat. Because of that , I was reincarnated into this lifetime as a dog. Throughout these three hundred years of the cycle of rebirth, I have been born as the daughter of others, and I have also fallen into the hells due to emotional debts. Life after death, death after life—the suffering was truly beyond words.
In this lifetime, even though I was in of a dog, my heart was happy. Lay Practitioner Peng Shaojin and her family treated me so well, and I am deeply thankful for the care they gave me. After my life ended, I could not bear to leave. I did not seek another rebirth; instead, I lingered around the house, continuing to stay by everyone's side. I never once considered seeking liberation from my canine identity. I felt as if I were trapped within this space, completely unaware and unable to wake myself from the fog."
Through Spiritual Deliverance
"I am so grateful to Practitioner Su of the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia for opening up this space for me. It was through the help of Lay Practitioner Peng Shaojin's father that I was granted this opportunity for Chao Du, which finally allowed me to wake up. The moment I shed my canine identity, I saw my past clearly, along with the many who were still following me. I wept so bitterly; at that moment, I was in such profound, overwhelming pain.
The suffering of being reincarnated was almost too much for me to bear. But fortunately, the power of the Buddha gave me the strength to find peace of mind, which allowed me to stabilise myself. Having listened to Practitioner Su's talks for some time, I have gradually rediscovered my original spirit. I know that it was Lay Practitioner Peng Shaojin and her family who saved me in this lifetime, and I have finally been able to achieve true liberation."
A Return to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss
"I am so happy now. My heart is completely at ease, free from the heavy burdens of the past. I have seen my past lives clearly, and I want to depart from this cycle; I do not wish to continue in the cycle of rebirth any longer. Thank you, Lay Practitioner Peng Shaojin, and thank you to everyone who has helped me! I am so joyful now. I have already arrived at the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. Here, there is no suffering—only the infinite of the spirit.
I am so thankful for this Causal Condition. I hope that all of you will also return here. I am waiting for you all, and I truly hope that everyone can achieve liberation in this very lifetime.
