From the Depths of Hell to the Western Pure Land

This is a record of an interview with Zhou Kunchuan, who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now resides in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon his life and his journey to liberation. Recorded by the chief writer, Shi Faxi, on June 16, 2023.

Zhou Kunchuan speaks:

"Namo Amituofo. After all these years, I have truly changed; I am no longer the man I once was. I am not the same Zhou Kunchuan who walked the earth so long ago.

The Agony of a Final Choice

Looking back at the end of my life, I chose to leave in such a violent, desperate way. Honestly, I have regretted it so deeply. The hells are absolutely terrifying! Ever since I made that choice, I have been trapped in endless suffering. I could not escape it. My heart was filled with such intense hatred—hatred for this world, and hatred for those I felt had wronged me. Because of this burning hatred, I endured unimaginable torture in the hells. I was completely unable to liberate myself; my own stubborn nature kept me shackled to that agony.

A Gentle Power of Deliverance

I must express my deepest gratitude for the gentle, compassionate power that helped me break free today. When I was called up, I finally realised how ignorant I had been all those days. Looking back at my past, I wept so loudly—I was filled with such profound regret! This is the first time I have felt such genuine remorse for the terrible mistakes I made. I failed my family. I failed my wife—my better half. I tore our home apart, and it was all because of my own character. I truly did wrong!

Finding Peace in the Buddha-Name

When my emotions were overwhelming, I heard the Buddha-name, and it began to gently purify my body. Only then could I slowly calm down. The compassion of the Buddha has saved me once again. After I finally found some peace, I began to listen to the Dharma talks by Practitioner Su. I started to understand the true meaning of life. I learned to let go of the past and began my practice. It is only today, as I prepare for rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, that I feel I have finally walked out of the darkness.

A Message to My Loved Ones

Life is so bitter! It is incredibly bitter! I want to say a few words to my wife and my family: 'I am Zhou Kunchuan. I am your husband, your father. But I did not do well. I did not fulfil my responsibilities as a husband, nor did I fulfil my duties as a father. I was a failure. I am so sorry to all of you.' (He covers his face and weeps bitterly.)

The Path to the Western Pure Land

Thankfully... thankfully we were able to encounter the Buddha. The Buddha is truly here at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre, and we have all been saved. From this day forward, there will be no more suffering. Ah Xing, I hope you will study the Dharma, listen to the teachings of Practitioner Su, and guide our children and grandchildren as well. I will be waiting for you in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. This is the only right path; you must all come here! Do not worry about me anymore. I am doing very well now, and I hope that all of you can be well, too.
