From the Depths of Hell to the Western Pure Land
An Interview with Lay Practitioner Jiang Li
This is a record of an interview with Lay Practitioner Jiang Li, who sought deliverance at the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now resides in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. This account reflects upon his transition from the profound suffering of the hells to the peace of the Pure Land. Recorded by the chief writer, Shi Fajing, on November 3, 2023.
Lay Practitioner Jiang Li speaks:
"Namo Amituofo. I am Jiang Li. I have spent so much time reflecting on my past. I used to think that my own suffering did not matter, but today, I can truly say that I have left all suffering behind. I have left it behind completely, down to the very core of my being.
I am filled with gratitude for the great of Practitioner Su, who led me to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. I truly struggle to believe what is before my eyes—this beautiful, breathtaking scenery is where I will reside for eternity. It is truly magnificent. As I look upon the dignified Western Trinity before me, I kneel and shed tears of relief. I kowtow in repentance for the sins I have committed throughout my many lives, and I kowtow in gratitude to my compassionate father, Namo Amituofo. It is only now, through his grace, that I have finally been granted liberation from the hells and have returned to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss.
The Illusion of Physical Suffering
During my life, I lacked the karmic fortune to encounter the Buddha’s teachings. I had no idea that when life reached its end, my spirit would be forced to continue enduring such agony. I had mistakenly believed that suffering was limited only to this physical body; I never realised that my spirit was suffering even more intensely.
My life was very short, and I know that I brought endless pain to my family. I am deeply sorry for that; I truly owe them an apology. My wife must still be grieving for me. She is such a wonderful woman, and I only regret that I did not have the karmic fortune to spend more time with her. However, I want to tell her: please, let go of the past! I am truly well now. I have arrived in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. There is not a single trace of pain here. I am happy—a happiness that radiates from the very depths of my heart, not the superficial smiles I used to wear in the past. I want to tell my wife: you are unhappy, but you can be happy. All you need to do is let go. Follow Namo Amituofo, and do not let anything weigh upon your heart. When you let go, your heart will naturally open.
The Truth of the World
This world is truly an illusion. Everything I experienced in the past is now nothing left. I always hoped that those around me could live better lives, but looking back now, I see that everyone’s heart is trapped. Life is filled with suffering, and when you add the relentless pursuit of , it becomes suffering upon suffering.
My wife has great karmic fortune to have encountered Practitioner Su and to have heard the talks. It was through her connection that I was given the opportunity to be rescued from the hells.
A Final Plea to
Because I had not repaid the karma accumulated throughout my many lives, I was tightly gripped by my karmic creditors in this lifetime. It eventually led to my illness, and my spirit descended into the hells to continue paying those debts. Although those days are now behind me, many of my karmic creditors are still suffering in the various realms of space. Today, I am attending a Dharma assembly, and I hope that my karmic creditors will seize this opportunity to follow Namo Amituofo and come with me to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. I sincerely repent to them and beg for their forgiveness. I pray that Namo Amituofo, in his great compassion, will lead them to liberation so they may leave their suffering behind.
