No-Mind is the True Light
Teachings from Maitreya Bodhisattva
Delivered during the Thrice Yearning Ceremony, September 10, 2017
The Simplicity of Nature and the Complexity of the Mind
On the tenth of September, 2017, during the , Maitreya offered these profound teachings to the fourfold assembly. He began by observing the natural state of existence: fish swim freely in the water, and children play joyfully in the courtyard. They find happiness in these simple moments, a that surpasses the complex cravings of the adult world. Why, then, do we worry so much about passing through life without a mind? The truth is that we often complicate our existence with unnecessary burdens, forgetting that the most natural state is one of ease and clarity.
For those of us in the fourfold assembly who are cultivating the , the bright spirit within should be our guide. We must not rely on external validation or the opinions of others. Instead, we should focus entirely on the principles of the Truth. When we allow our emotional intentions to dictate our path, we are merely following false thoughts. The Dharma principles are the only true standard. Whether we are inside or outside the temple, we must ensure that our actions are aligned with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.
Navigating the Degenerate Age
The world today often lacks true principles, with emotions flooding the heavens and clouding our judgment. This is the nature of the degenerate age, and we should not be surprised by the confusion we see around us. The Dharma is like the mirror of the heart, yet many people today have biased hearts. They do not seek to learn the fundamental principles; instead, they rely on their own limited theories and personal interpretations. I speak these words to you now so that you may recognise the path before you. We must ask ourselves: how is the worldly Dharma explained, and are we, as disciples of the Buddha, truly sincere in our practice?
The Practice of No-Thought
Can you truly know what it means to have no-mind? Have you ever experienced the state of no-thought? Can you grasp the essence of no-action? You must not let the waves of your heart sway you from your path. The Truth only reveals itself through the Dharma, and the true Dharma does not rely on any single person. Although we respect our teachers, the Dharma itself is the ultimate meaning. If you see the faults of the wise, do not store them in your . Simply act with integrity, and do not imitate the flaws of others. Only the principles of the Truth can serve as your true teaching.
The True Light of
You must see the benefit in the Dharma, rather than becoming infatuated with the teacher. I am Maitreya, and I ask you: are you smiling in your heart? Worldly dust does not cause you any real injury; the only injury comes from a confused heart. In this state of confusion, you cannot see the Truth, and you mistake the false for the real. We teach the practice of no-thought precisely because your heart tends to follow every passing desire. I advise you not to be hurt by all these false, impermanent objects. Why do you insist on believing they are real? What is the real thing? Why not seek the answer within? The Dharma nature is born from Awakening.
When you reach the state of no-thought, you see the . This is the fruit of the Tathagata. Abandon all worldly objects, for without objects, emptiness is the Truth. No-mind is the true light. Every thought that arises should be born from the Dharma nature. Wisdom is born from Prajna, and it is this wisdom that nurtures the seedlings of virtue in your heart. By healing the impurities of the heart, you purify the Dharma Body. This leads to the realisation of the perfect Reward Body Buddha, where comes to respond and verify your progress. This message was recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Shi Faxian.
