The Demon Who Challenged the Law

This is a record of an interview with Mokusi, a demon from an alien realm who sought Chao Du at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Australia. He now resides in the Western Dharma-Nature Land. This account reflects upon his experiences in China over an inconceivable span of time. Recorded by the chief writer, Fa Ning, on March 23, 2026.

Mokusi speaks:

"Namo Amituofo. I am Mokusi. I am currently standing here in the Western Dharma-Nature Land, and I wish to offer my most respectful prostrations to Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su. I am filled with such profound gratitude for your great resolve. Because of your compassion, a nameless demon like me—who spent so long wandering the vast lands of China—was suddenly swept up by the twelve golden lights of Namo Amituofo, guided by Practitioner Su, and brought to this incredibly bright and comfortable world. As an ancient demon, I never once imagined that I would see the light of day. I always felt that after running rampant in China for so many years, I was long overdue for karmic retribution. Yet, I was so incredibly lucky to escape one disaster after another.

Later, when Practitioner Su made his great vow to perform Chao Du for the masses of demons across mainland China, I was brought to this brand-new world—the Western Dharma-Nature Land. This transformation of my life and identity fills my heart with gratitude. I am finally able to start anew and let go of everything from my past."

The Tall and Thin Demon from the Alien Realm

"My name is Mokusi, and I come from an alien realm. Just hearing the name makes one think I must be a strange-looking creature. And you would be right! Every demon in our alien realm has a unique appearance. As for me, I am exceptionally tall—about three times the height of an average human—but I have remained thin, like a tall, slender bamboo pole standing upright in the space of that alien realm. Even when I arrived on Earth, I remained this way. If I were to stand in a crowd of people, I would be incredibly conspicuous. Everyone would immediately assume I was not a normal being. Yet, my facial features and limbs are just like those of a normal human; I am simply unusually tall and thin.

Recently, I have listened to many interviews with other demons, and I have discovered that their stories are not only fascinating but that they each had specific duties. They were intimately familiar with the affairs of China, and their areas of expertise—specifically in manipulating human hearts—were very clearly defined. Each one had such a distinct personality. To be honest, as a relatively 'young' demon, my qualifications are not as extensive as theirs, but I did participate in some deeply impactful events within China. Haha, so what kind of demon am I exactly? And what kind of people did I control? Let me tell you: it is quite a story."

The 'Legal Demon' and the Chaos of China

"Let me start with my experience of coming to Earth. At the time, I simply could not stay in the alien realm any longer. Many demons there shared my plight. In that realm, it was either a case of bullying others or being bullied yourself, and I was always the one being bullied. Even though I was so tall, I had absolutely no ability to resist, nor did I know how to fight back. I could only silently endure the mockery of others who laughed at me for looking like a bamboo pole. There was nothing I could do about it.

One day, I grew truly tired of that life, so I ventured out into the wider world. Although I was not yet at the age to enter samadhi, and I had never worried about being caught by the laws of karma and cause and effect, I just felt that I should be doing something with my life. After all, I was still young. I also desperately needed energy, and as I wandered between planets, I could only obtain a meager amount, which is why I remained so thin despite my height.

This time, I saw a planet that appeared almost entirely blue. Although it was small, it looked full of vitality. From afar, I knew this place must be teeming with life. Once I entered, I found that it was indeed so! This was a place where humans lived, with a pleasant climate, grasslands, water sources, high mountains, and vast oceans. It was a small but beautiful planet. I was immediately captivated by Earth. But Earth is so large—where should I settle down?

I tried living in various terrains and mountain ranges across the Earth, but the results were not ideal. Finally, after much wandering, I arrived at a vast plain. There was a river here called the Yellow River, located in what is today the land of China. On this land, demons also need water sources, and we need to absorb the essence and spirit of the people to maintain our demonic energy.

I, Mokusi, have a title: the 'Legal Demon.' The word 'legal' sounds like a positive term, doesn't it? Why would I have such a positive name? What could I possibly have to do with the law? To put it simply, I am the exact opposite of the law. For thousands of years in China, the regulations, statutes, and the legal systems that have formed—all matters related to the law—are, in my eyes, nothing more than boxes and frames that restrict people's lives.

When I first arrived in the land of China, a formal legal system had not yet fully formed. As time passed, I gradually saw the law take shape, and later, it was developed by people to be more comprehensive and complete. This made me feel uncomfortable. I am naturally free-spirited; I like to do things with my own style and form. If people were unable to fully express themselves because of legal restrictions, that would be a great pity.

Therefore, I did the exact opposite: I encouraged people to break the law. If someone had a thought of committing a crime, even before the act was carried out, I would amplify that thought, pushing them from the edge of innocence into the realm of criminality. Of course, I am not a demon with an intensely evil nature; I simply could not stand certain things that I found disagreeable or restrictive. Thus, I would impose my philosophy on others, hoping everyone could be like me. My goal was to challenge the rulers, to tell them that following the law is not the only way forward. I wanted the people I controlled to live their own lives, unconstrained by the social systems framed by legal codes."

The Puppet Master: Controlled by the Old Demon

"It is strange to say, but many of the people I controlled, after accepting my manipulation and committing illegal acts, did not face legal sanctions. Instead, they were able to continue living their lives by sheer luck, continuing to do evil. This, in turn, added to my own sins. Because these people were never truly brought to justice, the harm they caused to other beings was potentially endless.

I only understood this later. When I became a bit clearer, I realized that my own demonic power was actually controlled by other, more powerful demons, and I was not truly capable of controlling people on my own. In other words, I was not directly controlling people; rather, I was receiving commands from above. And that 'above' was a great, ancient demon who had come out of the alien realm with us.

He was indeed much older than me, and therefore his influence was much greater. He could see through the causes and consequences of every event at a glance, knowing whether a person would commit a crime and whether they would be punished. Therefore, every action I took was carried out under his control. The people I controlled generally did not face legal sanctions; instead, they exerted even greater demonic power, which brought great trouble to the social order of China throughout its dynasties.

This sounds inconceivable, doesn't it? As a demon, I had an even older demon controlling me. I, in turn, conveyed the same philosophy to the 'demon children and grandchildren' below me, forming a chain of control. We used ourselves as the starting point to control the society of China for thousands of years. Our control might seem insignificant—one person is controlled, commits a crime, and at most is thrown into prison or sentenced to death. But that is not the case. We were not controlling specific individuals; we were using them as a pivot. If the mistakes they made could influence the Body-Mind-Spirit development of many Chinese people, then the impact was immense.

So, when the person we controlled committed a crime, if their actions were influential in a certain era of China, I would receive instructions from the old demon to control that person and ensure they committed the crime. The situation would snowball, and they would become deeply immersed in it, unaware that they were violating the law. In this way, the scope of their influence became wider and wider."

A Path Toward the Righteous Way

"At this very moment, as I sit on a lotus seat in the Western Dharma-Nature Land, I am gradually waking up. I realise that everything I did on Earth was not entirely under my own control; I was receiving instructions from the old demon above me. And the moment I received those mental notes, I would naturally use my demonic body to execute everything he wanted to carry out in mainland China.

Like other demons, I had a demon palace. It was not large, nor was it magnificent; it was just an ordinary place where my demon children and grandchildren could live in peace. The location of my palace was actually very conspicuous—right on the major roads where people lived. Whether it was the roads of ancient times or the streets of today, there were many landmarks like intersections. I would always wait at these places, in the midst of the bustling crowds, to convey messages from the old demon to those I controlled.

It sounds truly absurd. I, a dignified demon being interviewed, lived a life where I could not even master my own actions. It is laughable. But to be honest, I enjoyed it at the time. Looking back, it was an unforgettable past. The land of China is truly a magical place, with a long history and diverse culture. The diversity of people's characters is also very interesting and complex. So, I spent many years there in silence. Although I was just receiving and transmitting orders, everything that happened passed before my eyes. These years were indeed a very spectacular few thousand years in Chinese history.

Haha, it all sounds so magical. Although I was not autonomous, I have now chosen a very correct path: to stop following others and instead honestly follow Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su. In this pure Buddha land of the Western Dharma-Nature Land, I am living a truly autonomous life. Now that my heart is settled, looking back at all of this, I finally understand that I was never a demon who could master his own fate. Having said so much, I have no regrets. After all, I have seen enough magical things during my time in the land of China. Although those who were controlled and committed sins caused widespread influence, I believe that everything will soon be restored under the purification of Practitioner Su. It will return to the basic track that aligns with Universal Principles, Truth, and the Right Path, and it will never deviate again. People's thoughts will also be gradually corrected, leading toward a beautiful society with true moral foundations.

Mokusi is deeply grateful to Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su. It is precisely because of Practitioner Su's great resolve in the human world that we demons have a place to settle. I know that mainland China was the place I was meant to come to, because I have an affinity with the Buddha. Having come alone from the alien realm to this distant Earth, I finally had the opportunity to receive Chao Du today. Everything is so inconceivable, and for this reason, I am even more infinitely grateful for everything Practitioner Su has brought to us.
